William H.(Holly) Whyte (1917-1999) is considered the mentor for Project for Public Spaces because of his seminal work in the study of human behavior in urban settings. While working with the New York City Planning Commission in 1969, Whyte began to wonder how newly planned city spaces were actually working out - something that no one had previously researched. This curiosity led to the Street Life Project, a pioneering study of pedestrian behavior and city dynamics.

The Center for Reinventing Government was founded by Paul Wolf an attorney with 17 years of experience working for various government agencies in Buffalo, New York. During his years of government service Paul often questioned why services were delivered in the manner they were. The typical response provided was "that is the way we have always done things". The status quo is not enough for any organization or individual to survive today's fast changing world. Government needs to strive for continuous improvement and reinvent how it makes decisions and provide services.

The Center for Active Design is a nonprofit resource for design professionals, policy makers, real estate developers and community advocates, committed to promoting and expanding the Active Design Guidelines published by New York City in 2010. We maintain a multi-disciplinary perspective in the translation of health research into design solutions that amplify the role of architecture and urban planning in improving public health and well-being.

The Un-School of Disruptive Design is an experimental knowledge lab in New York City. We curate brain-activating events, classes, fellowship programs and knowledge transfer experiences. Our lab encourages people from diverse professional backgrounds to reorient the way they perceive and act in the world, learning how to maximize their capacity to influence and affect positive social and environmental change.
