Does open source boost mental health? Posted 25 Aug 2014 by Phil Shapiro | Opensource... - 0 views

  •
"Open source is as much a philosophy of living as it is a method of creating software. Part of this philosophy is that everything designed by the human mind is improvable."

"I recently had the opportunity to speak with Jim Whitehurst, Red Hat CEO and author of The Open Organization, about his book. Because I also believe that a healthy culture is at the cornerstone of a successful business, Jim and I share a lot of the same philosophies, and he helped me see more clearly that the concept of an open organization is the model that drives employee engagement, growth, and continued improvement."

Genuinely collective emotions - 3 views

  •
It is received wisdom in philosophy and the cognitive sciences that individuals can be in emotional states but groups cannot. But why should we accept this view? In this paper, I argue that there is substantial philosophical and empirical support for the existence of collective emotions. Thus, while there is good reason to be skeptical about many ascriptions of collective emotion, I argue that some groups exhibit the computational complexity and informational integration required for being in genuinely emotional states.

Why Open Source Misses the Point of Free Software - GNU Project - Free Software Foundation - 0 views

  •
"by Richard Stallman When we call software "free," we mean that it respects the users' essential freedoms: the freedom to run it, to study and change it, and to redistribute copies with or without changes. This is a matter of freedom, not price, so think of "free speech," not "free beer.""

Beware of Contradictory "Support" - GNU Project - Free Software Foundation - 0 views

  •
"by Richard Stallman There are organizations that proclaim support for free software or the GNU Project, and teach classes in use of nonfree software. It's possible that they do some other things that really support free software, but those classes certainly don't. On the contrary, they work directly against the free software movement by promoting the use of the nonfree software. That increases the magnitude of the practical problem it is our mission to correct."

  •
"by Richard Stallman One of the major advantages of free software is that the community protects users from malicious software. Now Ubuntu GNU/Linux has become a counterexample. What should we do?"
