If the teacher is the quarterback, Congress is the offensive line. Their performance impacts our performance, but they keep letting us get sacked by poverty, broken homes, student mobility, hunger, health care. And they just say "Oops" as that linebacker blows by them and buries his facemask in our chest. Then we get back to the huddle and they say, "You gotta complete your passes." We're aware of that. Make your blocks, legislators. Give us time to stand in the pocket and throw good passes. Do your job. It doesn't take a great quarterback rating to win games; it takes a team effort.

The Hard Science of Teamwork - Alex "Sandy" Pentland - Harvard Business Review - 1 views

  • Our data show that great teams: Communicate frequently. In a typical project team a dozen or so communication exchanges per working hour may turn out to be optimum; but more or less than that and team performance can decline.Talk and listen in equal measure, equally among members. Lower performing teams have dominant members, teams within teams, and members who talk or listen but don't do both. Engage in frequent informal communication. The best teams spend about half their time communicating outside of formal meetings or as "asides" during team meetings, and increasing opportunities for informal communication tends to increase team performance.Explore for ideas and information outside the group. The best teams periodically connect with many different outside sources and bring what they learn back to the team.

I agree that unless we starting talking the same language as high school teachers students will feel that high school is something that is done to them rather than where they go to learn.

I wonder what's the subtext of this finding? We all know that non-metropolitan areas are more exposed to economic turndowns and recessions.

I know rural Wisconsin holds a special place in your heart and I appreciate that. AND we need to think about how Milwaukee is going to handle the challenges coming down the pike. One thing in common for urban Milwaukee and the rural areas of the state: K-12 education that prepares kids for post-secondary education.

Helicopters can improve minority college attendance & other misguided policy ... - 3 views

  • Well, the use of a “voucher” system to alter the educational setting for a group of kids is most certainly not the treatment. Voucher is merely the mechanism used here to achieve the treatment. It may be a policy mechanism that is useful under limited circumstances to achieve changes in educational setting. But the “voucher” is NOT the treatment.

  • Learning is always personal, intimate, specific. Our discussions of the pros and cons of different kinds of learning have to be equally so. To settle for any less — in one direction or the other — is to shortchange one of the most important conversations we can be having right now.
