healthbuzzz on 11 May 17A balloon valvotomy is a minimally invasive procedure. They will use a thin flexible tube (catheter) which is inserted through an artery in the groin or arm and threaded into the heart. When tube reaches the narrowed mitral valve, then a balloon device located on the tip of the catheter is quickly inflated. The narrowed or fused mitral valve leaflets will be separated and the stretched open as the balloon presses against them. This process will increases the size of mitral valve opening and it allows more blood to flow from the left atrium into the left ventricle.
