New Tool Plots Online Comments Like Stars in Constellations | Epicenter from Wired.com - 0 views

    Participatory media may be the future, but a look at most comment threads shows that technology hasn't figured out a good way to force humans to act like citizens instead of fifth graders. UC Berkeley's Center for New Media hopes it has a way to fix that mess in its Opinion Space visualization tool, which provides a planetarium view of users opinions. Opinion Space, which launched Wednesday, is quite pretty, mildly addictive and full of rich possibilities for visualizing a community's opinions. Wired.com would love to have such a tool at its disposal, though its almost certainly going to be an addition to, rather than an substitute for, traditional comment systems. The center built the tool as a response to President Barack Obama's call for greater civic participation, which it says is "designed to go beyond one-dimensional polarities such as left/right, blue/red to actively encourage dialogue between people with differing viewpoints."

Not good in sense that they dont structure the information we are generating. Info needs structure to be readable and parseable. We'll see tools come along where the structure of the information is parsed and shared. Example: Parsing out arguments. If you use the word "Pacifica" for my hometown, the machine should know that…because we know that. Tools today are not aware of semantic structure of an argument. Hello Semantic Web ; ) Awareness of structure and interactions of conversations. Meaning of what we are doing is better captured and parsed.

    answers to questions from Twitter on teen practices Before I headed to Atlanta to do fieldwork, I asked folks who follow me on Twitter (@zephoria) what questions I should ask teens. Many of the questions that I received were more general questions about teens, rather than questions for teens. Still, I'm going to take a stab at very briefly answering some of the questions that I received based on what I know and what I learned. I am not answering the larger questions that would require pages and pages and my apologies if my short answers are not sufficient but I wanted to at least respond. Thank you all who contributed questions and my apologies if I didn't answer yours. To all who asked questions about Twitter: average teens don't use Twitter. They may in the future, but they do not now. Those who do are early adopters and not representative of any mainstream teen practice. Because of Oprah and celebs, some teens are starting to hear about it, but they don't understand it and they aren't using it.

It aims to publish accounts of scholarly practice that report on small-scale practitioner research and case studies of practice that involve reflection, critique, implications for future practice and are informed by relevant literature, with a focus on enhancement of student learning. This publication thus offers a forum to develop and share scholarly informed practice in Higher Education through either works in progress or more detailed accounts of scholarly practice. There will be opportunities for discussions/comments regarding works in progress to be shared with journal readers on the journal site. The journal is published twice a year (April and October).

    "A definition for the term Personal Learning Environment (PLE), remains elusive. Conception about what should constitute a PLE depends on the perspective of the commentator. For example, the priorities for a PLE are different for a tertiary student, a university administrator, an instructor, a working professional, or an adult who persues an eclectic path of lifelong learning. Metaphorically, an individual may engage in a learning process that is either more acquisitional or participatory (Sfard, 1998). There are inconsistencies across these positions about what a PLE should do. But whether constructively and defensively, interest in PLE appears to be growing. At the time of writing this introduction (August 2006), no particular product or service exists that can definitively be categorised as a PLE, although some prototypical work is in progress. An inclusive, authoritative account about PLEs does not yet exist. Only a handful of articles have appeared in the academic and public press about PLEs since the term gained currency in 2004. This article has been compiled after tracking recent conversations in the blogosphere and following social bookmarks. "

I get this question a fair bit from new Twitter users and while I think Tweet frequency is an important topic (one I'll cover in a future post here at TwiTip) I think that there's another more important aspect of successful use of Twitter that I've not heard many people talk about… Silence….. (cue the crickets and tumbleweed). Regular tweets may well be an important part of successfully using Twitter but one thing that I've found equally important is regularly 'not tweeting'.

I will argue that this is the most important and valuable of all the goals for e-learning, but is the one that is furthest from being achieved."

    Tony Bates reckons these ideas won't 'sell' in most conventional universities... "which is why I think we need new universities that start from scratch"... I'm wondering what he actually *means* by 'start from scratch'...?! There's some interesting comments accompanying this post about what role 'traditional universities' will take in the future. George Siemens brings us back to earth a bit with his comments on Tony's vision... http://news.te-wu.eu/media-literacy-making-sense-of-new-technologies-and-media-by-george-siemens-oct-17-09-209/ I think it's great to have a vision, but we all need to identify what we personally - and others - need to do to make parts of that vision real, and go ahead and do it.
