Amazon.com will drop prices on most of its cloud computing services starting April 1, the largest US online retailer said on Wednesday, a day after rival Google outlined a major price cut of its own.

Google Inc slashed its cloud computing service prices on Tuesday, seeking to wrest customers from Amazon.com Inc and Microsoft Corp in the fast-growing market of renting computers and data storage to companies.

Google already runs much of the digital lives of consumers through email, internet searches and YouTube videos. Now it wants the corporations, too.

Price cuts from Amazon, Google and Microsoft support predictions that the public cloud computing market is a race to the bottom -- for pricing, that is. Customers will no doubt benefit, but cloud providers who aren't one of those three companies should be prepared for a long, hard war of attrition.
