If you have tried your hands in screencasting then you probably would have an idea that most of the screencasting applications cost money. TechSmith's Camtasia and Macromedia Captovate 2 are some of the best out there but they is out of the reach of many people. The market is definitely ruled by the paid softwares but it doesn't mean that there are no free applications for you. There are quite a few free screencasting applications which you can use without burning hole in your pocket.

As many of you know, who follow me on Langwitches, I am working on a Digital Storytelling Guide for Educators. I will be using Wordle to create a storytelling cloud with words that come to mind when you think what Digital Storytelling means to or for you. Please contribute keywords, that come to YOUR mind when you think of storytelling in a comment. Don’t hesitate to add duplicate keywords what digital storytelling means to you. That way Wordle will highlight more important keywords. I will add your reponses through the comments and through Twitter and Plurk to Wordle and add the collaborative cloud to this post and as part of the cover art of the hardcover book that will be available for free download on Lulu.com . This cloud will be a digital story in itself, told by all of us!

When online learning fails « Tony Bates - 0 views

From this the NBER had the cheek to conclude that online learning is not all that it’s cracked up to be.
-
online courses in this study were just video recordings of the classroom lectures.

Will someone please tell universities and colleges in the United States that they need to redesign courses for online teaching?

In general, where we are now in the online world is where we were before the beginning of e-learning [1]. Traditional theories of distance learning, of (for example) transactional distance, as described by Michael G. Moore, have been adapted for the online world. Content is organized according to this traditional model and delivered either completely online or in conjunction with more traditional seminars, to cohorts of students, led by an instructor, following a specified curriculum to be completed at a predetermined pace.

In learning, these trends are manifest in what is sometimes called "learner-centered" or "student-centered" design. This is more than just adapting for different learning styles or allowing the user to change the font size and background color; it is the placing of the control of learning itself into the hands of the learner
