Mathematics Animated - 13 views

  • Each animation is embedded in a web page that elaborates on what you will see, but some web-browsers may not like those embeddings; for that reason I've provided direct links to each of those embedded animations on the web page in which it's supposed to appear. If clicking on a link from this page opens a page that fails to display a movie, click on the link to that movie.

"Research is a process. It is a continuum of stages that together make up a research plan. Below is a tentative sketch of what we think are the seven important steps of a research plan. For each of these stages we featured a short collection of web tools to help you carry it out."

Encyclopedia of Life - Animals - Plants - Pictures & Information - 8 views

  •
The goal of Encyclopedia of Life is to be a portal to information about all species of life on Earth. Ultimately, the Encyclopedia hopes to "serve as an online reference source and database for every one of the 1.8 million species that are named and known on this planet, as well as all those later discovered and described. Encyclopedia of Life will be used as both a teaching and a learning tool, helping scientists, educators, students, and the community at large gain a better understanding of this planet and all who inhabit it." Many resources are available already, however, this site always will be a work in progress.

Automatically Pull Data between Different Google Spreadsheets - 3 views

  •
"One feature of Google spreadsheets is there is a function called ImportRange that allows you to pull data out of one sheet and into another. This can be really useful, if for example you have a spreadsheet that you are using to collaborate with others, and then somewhere along the line you want another person to be able to see some of the data in the sheet but not all of it. e.g. if you are using this to track student grades, you could have a master sheet that you and other tutors can see all of, you could then create a separate sheet for each student, and pull through only the data that refers to them (you then share that sheet with the student) and they have a live constantly updating record of what they have achieved etc."

I like this quote; how do we do this well within even just within a building or district?
  •
David Warlick has four things the POTUS ought to know about making U.S. schools better. Last month I posted a manifesto of sorts to my Web site. I was following a meme started by a group of other edubloggers called "Five things policymakers ought to know!" T&L editors asked me to tweak it a bit to give our next President some big-picture twenty-first-century education advice. Here's my take.

The Electric Educator: 9 Ways to Use Google Wave - 25 views

  • When a school closes, a large percentage of the student body may be sick, but a large percentage is not. A tool such as Wave enables the students who are well enough to collaborate together in an online environment.
  • Whenever I promote a new technology I always remind teachers that the fundamental aspects of effective instruction remain the same. Technology doesn't change the basics, it simply repackages them in a new and exciting way.
  • Another major problem is that the talented teachers are not motivated at all to go to the villages rather be in the big cities to enjoy the benefits that Big cities offer. With web 2.0 technologies we have a chance to solve these problems. I see a great future where for the first time in the history that we can provide education to the poorest people of those remote villages at a very low cost that is affordable

Interactive Periodic Table - 11 views

  •
According to the Touchspin (Design) Chemistry Web site, "Some other sites have more in depth information on chemistry, but I double-dog-dare-you to find anyplace with a better interactive periodic table. None other have the features and capabilities that this one offers." You can check out those features at the tool's FAQ page. When you're done, check out the site's new Biology area and find out what a horsefly's eye - or a pig's gall bladder -- look like under a microscope.

Time Search is a good general resource for history teachers and students. Simply enter a year, press "go" and you're shown a list of significant events that happened in that year. Scroll up or down the list to see events that happened early or late in the year. Time Search lists events that happened worldwide. You can select historical themes to narrow your list of events. You can also narrow results by selecting a region of the world. Next to each item in your events list you will see icons indicating availability of related images, quick text references, and map references. Not all icons appear for all events
