Teaching students how to evaluate websites

Technology is a tool that can be used to help teachers facilitate learning experiences that address the diverse learning needs of all students and help them develop 21st Century Skills, an idea supported by the Common Core. 

The For Teachers section includes free classroom materials written for students in grades 6-12 to deepen their understanding of the world and related social issues. These activities are intended to raise awareness of individuals who make a difference and show how problem solvers begin and carry out their work.

Becoming a social entrepreneur takes both a vision for revolutionary change and the gumption to do something about it. Students can try the games and activities on The New Heroes website to learn about the characteristics of a successful social entrepreneur and find out if they might have what it takes to transform a vision into reality. They can play a game that requires them to tackle the challenges of building a business with a social conscience. They can determine how they can make a difference by taking a quiz to find out which issues and problems most inspire them. And if they have an inspirational story or great idea for changing the world, they can share it with others on the site.

The goal of Encyclopedia of Life is to be a portal to information about all species of life on Earth. Ultimately, the Encyclopedia hopes to "serve as an online reference source and database for every one of the 1.8 million species that are named and known on this planet, as well as all those later discovered and described. Encyclopedia of Life will be used as both a teaching and a learning tool, helping scientists, educators, students, and the community at large gain a better understanding of this planet and all who inhabit it." Many resources are available already, however, this site always will be a work in progress.

Bandaids and Blackboards The intent of this site is to sensitize children to what it's like to grow up with a medical problem. This site provides personal experiences submitted by children (some have their own Web page with photos) and games for viewers. The benefits of this page for children with medical conditions and their parents are obvious, but the site also is a great resource for educators dealing with student illness.

Metablast is a real-time 3D action-adventure video game, aimed at high school and undergraduate student audiences, meant to provide an entertaining, engaging experience while simultaneously educating players about cell biology. By immersing players into a virtual cell environment and allowing them to interact with it on their own terms, the developers hope that players will come to a greater understanding of the cell than they could learn from traditional diagrams and textbooks.
