This handbook is a pedagogical tool to support educators in formal and non-formal systems to understand and put into practice global education activities. Global education is understood by the authors to encompass development education, human rights education, education for sustainability, education for peace and conflict prevention and intercultural education. By presenting global education philosophy and content, related methodology and evaluation issues, as well as by sharing existing practices, tools, resources and bibliography, the Guidelines aim to strengthen global education fundamentals and practices.

Registration opened earlier this week for a new short intervention course on Stanford University's free on-line platform. Designed for teachers of math (K-12) or for other helpers of students, such as parents, "How to Learn Math" consists of eight 10 to 15 minute-long sessions intended to change students' relationships with math. In addition to videos of Professor of Mathematics Education Jo Boaler, research ideas, and peer- and self-assessments, her course includes interviews with students, Udacity's Sebastian Thrun, Stanford Professor Carol Dweck, and others. The self-paced course launches Monday, 15 July, and closes Friday, 27 September. Boaler, the author of books such as What's Math Got To Do With It?, also serves as editor of the research commentary section of NCTM's Journal for Research in Mathematics Education (JRME).

The module Teaching and Learning Mathematics in Diverse Classrooms is intended as a guide to teaching mathematics for in-service teachers in primary schools. It is informed by the inclusive education policy (Education White Paper 6 Special Needs Education, 2001) and supports teachers in dealing with the diversity of learners in South African classrooms.

This unit gives a historical background to mathematics education in South Africa, to outcomes-based education and to the national curriculum statement for mathematics. The traditional approach to teaching mathematics is then contrasted with an approach to teaching mathematics that focuses on 'doing' mathematics, and mathematics as a science of pattern and order, in which learners actively explore mathematical ideas in a conducive classroom environment.

The aim of SAIDE ACEMaths project was to pilot a collaborative process for the selection, adaptation and use of OER materials for teacher education programmes in South Africa. Over a period of two years we adapted, piloted and revised a set of materials on the teaching and learning of maths for teacher education. SAMF is an initiative of AMESA (the Association for Mathematics Education of South Africa) and SAMS the South African Mathematical Society) and its activities include teacher and learner programmes, publication of teacher and learner support materials, popularisation of mathematics and promoting public interest in mathematics research in South Africa. The SAMF ensures that the combined skills, know-how and professional capabilities of the members of these two societies are utilised in a professional manner.  In this way the SAMF is a central office for Mathematics in the country and represents the entire mathematics community in South Africa.
