This is a discussion group for all South African Mathematics teachers seeking support in the implementation of the new FET mathematics, mathematics literacy and advanced programme mathematics curricula. SAMF is an initiative of AMESA (the Association for Mathematics Education of South Africa) and SAMS the South African Mathematical Society) and its activities include teacher and learner programmes, publication of teacher and learner support materials, popularisation of mathematics and promoting public interest in mathematics research in South Africa. The SAMF ensures that the combined skills, know-how and professional capabilities of the members of these two societies are utilised in a professional manner.  In this way the SAMF is a central office for Mathematics in the country and represents the entire mathematics community in South Africa.

Math teacher and researcher Tom O'Brien offers resources and activities through this site, with planned updates each month to add more materials. These include books published by the UK's Association of Teachers of Mathematics--some out of print --now downloadable and available for purchase. Excerpts from the e-books are available free, as well as three articles by O'Brien and colleagues. O'Brien recommends software as well, some of which is available free of charge.

All the materials developed by MALATI are in the public domain. They may be freely used and adapted, with acknowledgement to MALATI and the Open Society Foundation for South Africa. The documents provided here are the teacher documents, consisting of the learner activities and accompanying teacher notes. We also include the rationale document for each content area, giving background on the underlying philosophy and design principles.

The module Teaching and Learning Mathematics in Diverse Classrooms is intended as a guide to teaching mathematics for in-service teachers in primary schools. It is informed by the inclusive education policy (Education White Paper 6 Special Needs Education, 2001) and supports teachers in dealing with the diversity of learners in South African classrooms.

The aim of SAIDE ACEMaths project was to pilot a collaborative process for the selection, adaptation and use of OER materials for teacher education programmes in South Africa. Over a period of two years we adapted, piloted and revised a set of materials on the teaching and learning of maths for teacher education. These are now available for downloading FOR FREE in two formats - for printing (PDF), and for adaptation (Word). See the ACEMaths Module to have a look.

The goal of the software is to help you the teacher author, edit and compile drill and practice e-learning assignments in math. Topics such as algebra, calculus, trigonometry and geometry can be introduced to students using this educational software. The software is geared towards K-12 particularly from grades 7 - 12. It can also be used to introduce math based topics at college and university levels. The content is created by you the teacher so you decide the difficulty level of each assignment. The purpose of the software is to help your students with calculation methodology by attempting interactive drill and practice assignments.

Description: ImfundoYami / ImfundoYethu is a platform to deliver maths education to grade 10 learners using MXit, the popular mobile instant messaging service. The learners can access maths exercises and related maths help. The teacher logs into a web-based management system to send ad hoc tests to learners and provide personal support. The teacher can monitor test results and see how much learners have been using the system.

GeoGebra: Do the Math is a series of screencast tutorials for teachers and/or students. The tutorials were initiated as a project to support Maine math teachers in the integration of technology in the classroom. What is GeoGebra provides an overview of the program and its capabilities. Several tutorials present the program's menu options and tools in step-by-step format. Another group of tutorials provides examples of GeoGebra learning activities in major math content areas. These tutorials are intended as a visual supplement to printed guides and documentation. GeoGebra users can find a wealth of guidance and examples at www.geogebra.org. A web search such as "GeoGebra Pythagorean Theorem" will yield hundreds of additional articles, examples, and applets.
