Short direct videos that explain concepts in easy-to-understand terms. Mostly focusing on technology topics, these videos could be used to help with staff development or in the classrooms with students. For students, these videos would make great intros to technology topics or stand as excellent examples that they could model their own videos after for an assignment (eg. explain Google docs to an incoming student through a video they can watch again and again). Generally speaking, accessing Common Craft videos through You Tube is easier, but this has a nice table of contents.

Fun way to engage your audience. Requires texting, so school policies will dictate whether you can use this with students in the classroom. You could also try using it outside of the classroom. Live poll results can be featured within your PowerPoint, which is very engaging. Adults also enjoy this so using it at parent nights can be a clever way to show your teachers/admin understand technology while making sure they are keeping their focus on you and not checking their Facebook pages on their phones. Faculty might also like to see the possibilities of this tool. It is free within certain parameters. I have the paid version only because I needed it for a particularly large group - if you choose this option, be aware that the next year's charge is automatically placed on your cc after one year.

The Khan Academy is an organization on a mission. They're a not-for-profit with the goal of changing education for the better by providing a free world-class education to anyone anywhere. All of the site's resources are available to anyone. It doesn't matter if you are a student, teacher, home-schooler, principal, adult returning to the classroom after 20 years, or a friendly alien just trying to get a leg up in earthly biology. The Khan Academy's materials and resources are available to you completely free of charge.

Great site to make pictures with words. Students can run passages or speeches through Wordle to come find the main points. This could extend from entering in a sonnet to inputing a student's own diet record. Design elements make this fun to play with. Could be used with technology lesson to review the role of tag clouds on the internet or look at visual representations of information (eg. surveys).

LiveBinders is a free resource that allows you to gather together all of the web-pages you want in one location. You can also include images, videos, and documents (as pdfs) in the binder. Teachers may want to let younger students access the pages they need directly from a binder. Teachers might want to gather all of their websites and resources for a topic in one binder - like all math worksheet sites. Students can put all of the pages in one binder as they are working on a project - to make the information more manageable. Currently, I have students using this for their Technology process folders - they can make tabs for each part of the process, keep all the pages they refer to, and upload any documents they create in googledocs as pdfs. They give me access to see them so i can know how much progress they have made. I actually made a binder with the tabs laid out for them that they copied so we could all start with the same basic plan.

The Open Educational Resources (OER) Commons is a collection of resources including open textbooks, lesson plans, and other materials. The thousands of items available can be searched by grade level and subject. All materials are available according to the different types of Creative Commons license. Teachers can work collaboratively in the wiki to create new materials; tagging and social bookmarking are features of the site.

Intended for HS and College chemistry students. Older students will be able to work through virtual labs or solve a murder mystery in a game. The interactive periodic table would be useful for MS students who are becoming familiar with the elements. There are also many links to hands on activities for younger students. Many partnerships and sponsorships with private institutes and journals help to ensure the highest quality of content. The Chemical Collective site is gathering information on teacher use of and student response to the use of virtual labs.

Simulations of scientific processes for middle and high school level content. Topics include semi-conductors and cellular respiration. Students can submit their assignments or print them out after they have completed working through a module. The website also provides options for teachers and students to create their own simulations. Free, open source tool.

This site is a perfect example of the benefits of technology. People are no longer allowed to go into the actual caves in Lascaux, because simply exhaling will damage the already delicate paintings. However, this very robust site attempts to give you the experience of really being there. There is a tour of the caves that can be narrated in different languages, including English and Sign Language. Throughout the video tour, there are pop-ups to click if you want to explore one of the panels in greater depth. This page is part of a greater collection of multimedia resources on French archeology sites.
