College students are 'addicted' to social media and even experience withdrawal symptoms... - 3 views

  •
Students in the University of Maryland research were asked to give up all media for a day .For the research, titled "24 Hours: Unplugged," 200 students at the University of Maryland's College Park Campus blogged about their experiences after a day of giving up all social media. The project director Susan Moeller noticed that what they wrote at length about was how they hated losing their personal connections. Going without media meant, in their world, going without their friends and family." The students missed not much of the media but the social connections that it facilitates. Social media seems inevitable in this 21 century
  •
Ezy, this is a great example and shows how connected we are with the social media. I wonder if they have some demographic information in the research. How do their responses change based on age, gender etc.
  •
I can relate to that article. I sat in my camper last nite and didn't feel very good. Maybe that was related to the fact that my cell phone was my only means of communicating with others? :-) I realize things are changing, but its crazy to me how accessible people are these days. I find at work that there is a tipping work on the other extreme where being contacted too much has a negative effect.

Danger, danger! Tech overload ahead | Adventures in IT - InfoWorld - 2 views

Interesting article that brings up some good points. Personally I think that technology can be a distraction... but only if you let it. It seems to me that increasingly generation y demands flexibility, and technology allows people to be connected anywhere anytime.

Wiggio - 2 views

This is a tool used to foster group communication. I've used this quite a bit in past MEd classes. It's really easy to setup, but was a little lacking in some of the functionality last time I used it. It worked pretty well for keeping a group organized and fostering communication.

Wiggio! That's it. I was trying to think of the name of this earlier today, so thanks. It has definitely been a great tool for distance collaborative efforts.
  •
Could any of you use Wiggio in your presentation next week? I think it will be a great tool to introduce to the class.
  •
I can cover Wiggio. I've used it a few times and works pretty well for small group interactions.
  •
Great. You can design a small group activity for the class. Thanks Brent.

Class Polling (via cell phone) - 2 views

  •
Interesting way of adhoc polling (without clickers). Its effective and easy (some of my faculty are using it), however I see some privacy concerns (mostly perception) that if I txt a response it is coming from my mobile number which is generally seen as identifiable (Even if its blocked in the poll.

Can you moderate the responses before they are published?

Have any of you tried out diaspora? I just read about this open-source social network and it sounds pretty cool. Will it overtake Facebook? Probably not, but it will be real interesting to see what comes out of it.

10 Search Engines to Explore the Invisible Web - 1 views

Interesting to think beyond what basic searching google does. I think sometimes we "Cripple" our searches by just checking google. Of course I always remind students that "web" is not peer reviewed journal, there is no quality control.

This is VERY interesting- I had no idea there were sites that indexed private networks. I am also convinced that the "crawler" is outdated.
  •
I was using google scholar to search for scholarly papers. I will check these out to see if I can do my literature search using some of them.
  •
Google scholar has probably more advantages in that you can see who the preeminent author (most cited but other pubs) is. Its great for that. Interesting discussion on pros and cons of indexing such as google scholar. I guess it misses a bit.... even so I find it a very useful tool. http://blogs.ubc.ca/dean/2007/11/top-five-5-problems-with-google-scholar-three-years-later/ (ive spoken to ref librarians that are not crazy about it either). I think like all the search tools, they are good but not good enough to be "the" exclusive tool.

What Should They See? - 1 views

  •
This blogger (one from Evrim's list) had an interesting post about a survey he did and the responses he got. The question was: "What should they (administrators) see as evidence of Technology Integration in classrooms?" He wrote up a full article on it, but I think his blog is better with some snippets of responses.
