US ranks 26th in new broadband index - Computerworld - 0 views

Another report that shows how much progress there is to be made. We struggle with this in Iowa quite a lot with students enrolled in classes who simply cannot get any high speed. Sure dish type service is a option but it generally has poor latency, which makes it hard to use synchronous collaboration tools.

Exactly, my family in Turkey has a better connection than I do here at my home in Ames.

Thanks for sharing. I really like how they did the real-time collaboration improvements. It's nice having a color w/ that person's name in there as they type.

This is a tool used to foster group communication. I've used this quite a bit in past MEd classes. It's really easy to setup, but was a little lacking in some of the functionality last time I used it. It worked pretty well for keeping a group organized and fostering communication.

Wiggio! That's it. I was trying to think of the name of this earlier today, so thanks. It has definitely been a great tool for distance collaborative efforts.
  •
Could any of you use Wiggio in your presentation next week? I think it will be a great tool to introduce to the class.
  •
I can cover Wiggio. I've used it a few times and works pretty well for small group interactions.

Great. You can design a small group activity for the class. Thanks Brent.

Wonder Wheel "mind maps" concepts - 0 views

Go to a Google search -> more options -> Wonder Wheel I think collaborative mind mapping would be a good avenue to create "ad hoc" wikis.

The Social Media Classroom | DMLcentral - 0 views

  • I had assumed that all the laptop-staring, smartphone-glancing students were like my daughter (a college student when I started teaching) and all her friends and the other digital natives I had heard so much about. So I put together an online survey and discovered a wide disparity in my students' web skills. Just because they Facebook, text, or participate in online games doesn't mean that all young people understand rhetorics of blogging or collaborative uses of wikis or building personal learning networks with Twitter.

We have to be careful not to assume that all "social media engaged" individuals understand all social tools. I made that assumption about myself in CI593 because I used a few tools I thought everything else would be easy. That was far from reality.
