What do you know about music in Chinese culture? What are your ideas for the group presentation?
  • Jillian Crowley

I do not know much about music in Chinese culture except:
-music has played a large role in China's history
-there are many different styles of Chinese music based on the region in China and the time period
-music is used in festivals for entertainment
-also used in ceremonies and in worshipping
-much of China's current popular music is controversial because it has been influenced by the West

For the presentation I think we should have clips on the different genres of Chinese music and discuss the different types of instruments used in Chinese music.
  • Nicholas Pelletier

I am in a similar situation where I do not know that much about traditional Chinese music. On top of what Jillian said:

-I think that drums / percussion in general play a large role in traditional Chinese music.
-The same goes for bells, gongs, and other large metalic instruments.
-I think that stringed instruments that make almost shrill sounds are pretty common too. One of the more common ones is called the pipa.
-I am a singer and my choir was invited to go over and sing at various festivals before the 2008 Olympics. This gave me an interesting opportunity to see that while music from the West is widely enjoyed in China, it needs to be in the right context. The way that it was received was also very different. For example, during some concerts, people in the audience would stand up and start applauding as soon as they decided they liked the song.. even if we had just started singing it.

I entirely agree about the different genre clips in the presentation. With the instruments, we could also do something where we put up two similar Chinese instruments on a ppoint slide and then we could play a clip of each to see how their sounds differ.

Nick's China singing tour is a great experience. In the Journey to the west clip we watched in class, you can find that there were a few pauses for the applauses during the performance,.
Different genre and instruments are great ideas.
What do the rest of the group think?

I agree with both Nick and Jillian. I feel that musical clips will definitely help add to our presentation, and that they will give an entertaining, yet helpful, example. I don't know too much about Chinese music, but I think that focusing on the instruments that play an integral role in creating the traditional chinese "sound" is an interesting focus. They seem to be so different from the instruments we are familiar with in traditional western music.

The importance of music in celebrations, festivals and religion also seems to be a large source of China's music history.

I like Jillian's final point on the impact of western music on modern chinese music, and how because of this influence there is controversy.

A good start. Let's do some research online, post your bookmarks, highlight the passages of your interest and share your notes

The following website gives a good overview of some Chinese string instruments. I think that some of these should be included in the powerpoint with clips of them playing.

This website provides a condensed yet thorough explanation on the history of chinese music. It touches on the yin yang harmony that we learned about in class on friday. Pages 1 and 3 are definitely the most helpful.

Great job, the music team! I am so glad to see that you are including the history of Chinese music in your presentation in addition to the instruments. I like the the way Andrew shares his bookmark with the class. Nice highlights and notes. It would be great if you can also share thoughts on the video clips you found and discuss how you can put things together for the presentation. It would be nice if Jillian can share more thoughts, too.
Please remember to send your outline of the presentation and 3-5 discussion questions to me before class.
I look forward to your presentation.

We met this morning for a couple of ours to discuss chinese music. We also put together our presentation for tomorrow's class. We realize that we didn't all highlight and explain the significance of our links on diigo. However, this is because we were together and therefore discussing the videos and websites out loud with one another.

For our presentation we have created 13 slides for our power point that include different aspects of Chinese music, pictures and video clips. The slides present information on:
    -Yin and Yang
    -History
    -General characteristics
    -Eight Sounds of Chinese Music
-Instruments (including pictures of traditional instruments)
-Video Clips of Chinese instruments, orchestras and current popular songs
    -Discussion Questions

I like the structure and the questions. Great job!

For my final project, I am interested on researching Western Medicine and its influence on the East. I hope to learn more about Western Medicine in general, its purposes, uses, advantage and disadvantages, how and why it has become increasingly popular in eastern society today.
  • Haley O'Brien

So sorry, but I meant to say Eastern medicine and its influence on the west! I hope to learn more about Eastern Medicine, not western.
