  • Today's classrooms are notorious for handing students the basic skills to live in the world while denying them the strength of character to transform it.
  • Angela Duckworth (1), an associate professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, studied (among others) the performance of West Point cadets during basic training. She discovered that the most powerful predictor of success -- acceptance into the academy -- was grit. Duckworth calls grit "the tendency to sustain interest in and effort toward very long-term goals."
  • Duckworth’s research is heir to the work of Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck (2) on mindsets. Believing that we can succeed even after suffering repeated setbacks (what Dweck calls a "growth mindset") can actually re-wire our brains -- and rewrite our fortunes.

  • As a staff, if we said, ‘Here’s our first chance to engage parents,’ then surely open houses… would be a much warmer, much more collaborative event and linked to learning.”
  • Consider having a general orientation for parents before the beginning of school – more of a mini-fair, with fun activities and a chance to get to know school staff. This is distinct from the open house in mid-September, which is more academically focused. -   Encourage teachers to make a positive phone call to each family early in the year so that calls on behavior problems are not the first time parents hear from the school.
  •   Give parents and guardians name tags and a chance to socialize with family members of other students.
  • Have students be leaders of the open house at the classroom level: students prepare a PowerPoint presentation on what they are learning and what the plan is going forward.

  • The bottom line: family members should leave the open house excited about the school year, clear about three or four things their child will know by the end of the year, and feeling part of a team that will help students accomplish those key learnings.

    Recommended in this week's Marshall Memo: "In this column in Phi Delta Kappan, PDK International CEO Joshua Starr says three things worry him about "the rapid and widespread embrace" of social-emotional learning (SEL). First, the concept has become "too fuzzy to be useful" - it can mean growth mindset, grit, anti-bullying, collaborative learning, classroom management, and more. Second, developers are creating social-emotional learning products and hyping them as ways to transform schools (if we purchase and implement them with fidelity). Third, says Starr, 'I worry that the SEL movement hasn't been careful enough to address the racial divisions that permeate American public education… It's no surprise that many critics have begun to push back on the idea that children of color need white educators to teach them to persevere and regulate their behavior.' Starr has these suggestions to get social-emotional learning back on track so that it makes a positive difference in schools"
