Straight from the DOE: Dispelling Myths About Blocked Sites | MindShift - 1 views

  • Cator parsed the rules of the Childrens Internet Protection Act, and provided guidance for teachers on how to proceed when it comes to interpreting the rules.
  • Accessing YouTube is not violating CIPA rules

But, I really CAN understand if a district doesn't have the bandwidth to support it being open to all on every computer. But why not in the library, at least?
  • Websites don’t have to be blocked for teachers
    • anonymous

This one dirves me NUTS!! Even in the SUMMER some tech folks won't open up the filter and just block the porn.
  • ...8 more annotations...
  • Schools will not lose E-rate funding by unblocking appropriate sites.
    • anonymous

Then, if this is the case, ANY filtering beyond the Porn sites should be considered Censorship, IMHO
  • Teachers should be trusted.

      Can I hear ANOTHER Amen?
  • See the excerpt below from the National Education Technology Plan, approved by officials who dictate E-rate rules.
  • Kids need to be taught how to be responsible digital citizens
  • Broad filters are not helpful
    • anonymous

      Amen!
  • [We need to] address the topic at school or home in the form of education,” Cator says. “How do we educate this generation of young people to be safe online, to be secure online, to protect their personal information, to understand privacy, and how that all plays out when they’re in an online space?”
    • Michelle Eichelberger

Exactly!! I wish I could get this through to our district and make this a priority!
  • We also want students to be nice to each other, and not to engage in bullying, in an online space where their voice is amplified and persistent. We want students to grow up to be good digital citizen.
    • Michelle Eichelberger

We need to be proactive in this, not always cleaning up the "mess" once cyberbullying has taken place.
  • requires providing professional development for adults working with these students.

      This is so necessary.

"To clear up some of the confusion around these comments and assertions, I went straight to the top: the Department of Education's Director of Education Technology, Karen Cator. Cator parsed the rules of the Childrens Internet Protection Act, and provided guidance for teachers on how to proceed when it comes to interpreting the rules. To that end, here are six surprising rules that educators, administrators, parents and students might not know about website filtering in schools."

Copyright Alliance Education Foundation - 8 views

  •
The issues surrounding copyright have never been more visible. But the classroom presents its own copyright-related challenges, for students and teachers alike. How is an educator to know what the rules are? How do those rules apply in the classroom? And how can we make sure that students know the rules as well? To help educators answer these questions, the Copyright Alliance has established the Copyright Alliance Education Foundation.

50 Lessons | View Lesson - The 'No Asshole' Rule (Professor Robert Sutton) - 0 views

  •
A provocative title about a very real world topic. Enjoy - and share with discretion (I can point you towards the blog about the Sunday School lesson built around this, if you need it). :-)
  •
Relevant to anyone who works with people. A four-minute summary of Sutton's famous rule. A "free sample" from the 50 Lessons collection. Sutton's lesson is summarized elsewhere as asking: "How do you treat the person right in front of you right now"? Avoid hiring jerks; don't allow anti-social behavior; sometimes you can only get even ("Yes, he's going to LA, but his bags are going to Nairobi"). World Cup 2010: Ghana take a direct route past the U.S. in last eight - 0 views

  •
Ghana alone the banner of Africa into the last eight World Cup and are committed to make every effort to make the continent host pride. Africans of all nations seem to get behind the Black Stars too, for lack of any practical alternative, but if Ghanaians really want to connect with the soul of the continent should probably bone up the rules a little more.

GREAT LIST OF SITES FOR ANALYZING BIAS IN MEDIA "Bias is manifest in texts when authors present particular values as if they were universal. For example, bias can be conveyed in the media through the selection of stories, sequence, and slant in newscasts; the placement or omission of stories in newspapers; who is interviewed and left out in radio or television talk shows and news programs; the advertisements on webpages, television, magazines, radio shows targeted at specific audiences; the lyrics of commercial jingles and popular music, and the images displayed with them in broadcast commercials and music videos; the goals, procedures, and the rules of video games."

  •
A WebQuest about Evaluation Websites. If you are like most students, you are relying heavily on resources from the Web for your research. Not all Web resources are created equal. If fact, there are great variations in the quality of the resources you access. The rule of thumb is "when in doubt, doubt." When you carefully select your resources, when you understand their strengths and limits, you create better products.
