I like this a LOT. It tells the story of 'stuff', where it comes from, where it goes, and a LOT more in between. Envirnmental s cience classes should LOVE this. Makes agreat writing prompt, too, i think. (This also came from teh ASCD Brief email)

Excellent 20 minute video at the top of the page talks about where" stuff" comes from and where it goes and who is impacted along the way. Important for kids of all ages to hear. Great writing prompt, maybe?

CS Unplugged is a collection of free learning activities that teach Computer Science through engaging games and puzzles that use cards, string, crayons and lots of running around. The activities introduce students to underlying concepts such as binary numbers, algorithms and data compression, separated from the distractions and technical details we usually see with computers. CS Unplugged is suitable for people of all ages, from elementary school to seniors, and from many countries and backgrounds. Unplugged has been used around the world for over fifteen years, in classrooms, science centers, homes, and even for holiday events in a park!

I attended a presentation at the NCTM conference in April about UDL.  It's a new spin on an age-old concept of differentiation and how people learn best.  It's definitely something for me to think about in terms of curriculum, delivery, and assessment.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), a component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), created this Web site to educate adolescents ages 11 through 15 (as well as their parents and teachers) on the science behind drug abuse. NIDA enlisted the help of teens in developing the site to ensure that the content addresses appropriate questions and timely concerns. Recognizing that teens want to be treated as equals, NIDA scientists were careful not to preach about the dangers of drug use. Rather, the site delivers science-based facts about how drugs affect the brain and body so that kids will be armed with better information to make healthy decisions. Elements such as animated illustrations, quizzes, and games are used throughout the site to clarify concepts, test the visitor's knowledge, and make learning fun through interaction.

Cool site! a free collection of educational videos for students ages 3-18. There are more then 11,000 videos on such subjects as math, science, and history. Students, parents and teachers have designated pages and the site offers a guide for contributors. Featured videos originate from national Geographic, YouTube, and google Videos, among others, and have been endorsed by educators from universities such as Harsvard, Standford, and Brigham Young University.

There are lots of resources, lessons, book suggestions by age level. There is a tool that teachers and parents can use to help a child find a book that would interest them. There is a link about getting boys to read. There are interview with authors and famous people. There is a blog.

Science News for Kids is a web site devoted to science news for children of ages 9 to 14. Our goal is to offer timely items of interest to kids, accompanied by suggestions for hands-on activities, books, articles, Web resources, and other useful materials. Our emphasis is on making the Web site appealing by offering kids opportunities to comment on and grade the subject matter, get ideas for science projects, and try out mathematical puzzles.
