Top News - Social-networking apps can pose security risks - 0 views

  • Turns out, even the privacy-conscious Sarah Browns of the world freely hand over personal information to perfect strangers. They do so every time they download and install what's known as an "application," one of thousands of mini-programs on a growing number of social-networking web sites that are designed by third-party developers for anything from games and sports teams to trivia quizzes and virtual gifts.
  • People often think Facebook profiles and sometimes MySpace pages, if they're set as private, are only available to friends or specific groups, such as a university, workplace, or even a city.
  • But that's not true if they use applications.
  • ...4 more annotations...
  • News Corp.'s MySpace, which has about 117 million unique visitors each month,
  • giving developers access to the profiles of anyone who downloads them
  • MySpace users don't have to include their names on their profiles.
  • They also point out that some information, such as eMail addresses and phone numbers, aren't made available.

Graduation exam compromise earning mixed grades - 0 views

  • The latest version of Keystone Exams calls for the state to provide 10 end-of-course exams, beginning with English literature, Algebra 1 and biology in 2010-11, with other subjects being phased in through 2016-17. The state would ask the federal government to permit the first three to be used to satisfy the No Child Left Behind Act beginning in 2012-13, thus enabling the state to discontinue the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment exams in 11th grade.
  • For graduation purposes, school districts would need to count the exams for at least one-third of a student's final grade or districts could use validated local assessments or Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate exams instead.
  •
In defending this exam idea, one person said that she felt it was BETTER to give these tests than one PSSA test every three years. "Wouldn't you rather take the test when you can still remember the material?" Hmmm. Think about that for a couple of minutes.

In order to reach your goals you must work hard. By working hard and being careful with your money, you can reach your goals. Rules: 1. You must identify your goals before the game begins. Everyone needs at least five goals. 2. Everyone will be randomly assigned to a job that pays minimum wage. 3. In order to earn money you need to complete the requirements on your task card. When you complete those requirements you will be paid. 4. You can work more than one job, but you have to complete all of the requirements of your assigned job first. 5. You can not work any more than 39.9 hours at any one job. 6. You must pay all of your bills including Taxes, Food & Beverages, Rent, Utilities, and "surprise bills" before spending your money on any of your goal items. 7. You cannot steal money. If you steal you will be sent to jail and disqualified from the game."

InfuseLearning provides a platform by which teachers can seamlessly engage every student on any device. Make informed decisions at the point of instruction with real-time, student feedback.
  •
I shared this with one of our elementary schools this morning. However, a support person at InfuseLearning told me this week it most likely will not always be free. Portions of it will remain free, but others will be a cost, although the support person didn't know what would/would not remain free. He also was not able to provide a timeframe as to when a cost would begin to be added to InfuseLearning.

Experience with facilitating professional development and TurnItIn - 1 views

  •
In an environment where global economy, global collaboration, and global 'knowledge' are  the aspiration of many countries, the understanding of the complexities of plagiarism becomes  a global requirement that needs to be addressed by all educators and learners. This paper  considers a simple definition of plagiarism, and then briefly considers reasons why students  plagiarise. At Unitec NZ, Te Puna Ako: The Centre for Teaching and Learning Innovation  (TPA:CTLI) is working closely with faculty, managers, student support services and library  personnel to introduce strategies and tools that can be integrated into programmes and  curricula whilst remaining flexible enough to be tailored for specific learners. The authors  therefore provide an overview of one of the tools available to check student work for  plagiarism - Turnitin - and describe the academic Professional Development (PD)  approaches that have been put in place to share existing expertise, as well as help staff at  Unitec NZ to use the tool in pedagogically informed ways, which also assist students in its  use. Evaluation and results are considered, before concluding with some recommendations. It  goes on to theorise how blended programmes that fully integrate academic literacy skills and  conventions might be used to positively scaffold students in the avoidance of plagiarism.  Conference participants will be asked to comment on and discuss their institutions' approach  to supporting the avoidance of plagiarism (including the utilisation of PDS and other  deterrents), describe their own personal experiences, and relate the strategies they employ in  their teaching practice and assessment design to help their learners avoid plagiarism. It is  planned to record the session so that the audience's narratives can be shared with other  practitioners.

Envisioning the Post-LMS Era: The Open Learning Network (EDUCAUSE Quarterly) | EDUCAUSE... - 0 views

  •
Although central to the business of higher education, the LMS has also become a symbol of the status quo that supports administrative functions more effectively than teaching and learning activities. Personal learning environments offer an alternative, but with their own limitations. An open learning network helps bridge the gap between the PLE and the LMS, combining the best elements of each approach. The initial implementation of an OLN at Brigham Young University represents a new learning platform model in higher education.

School of One - School Of One - New York City Department of Education - 4 views

  •
"The mission of School of One is to provide students with personalized, effective, and dynamic classroom instruction so that teachers have more time to focus on the quality of their instruction. To achieve this mission, School of One re-imagines the traditional classroom model. Instead of one teacher and 25-30 students in a classroom, each student participates in multiple instructional modalities, including a combination of teacher-led instruction, one-on-one tutoring, independent learning, and work with virtual tutors. To organize this type of learning, each student receives a unique daily schedule based on his or her academic strengths and needs. As a result, students within the same school or even the same classroom can receive profoundly different instruction as each student's schedule is tailored to the skills they need and the ways they best learn. Teachers acquire data about student achievement each day and then adapt their live instructional lessons accordingly. By leveraging technology to play a more essential role in planning instruction, teachers have more time to focus on doing what they do best - delivering quality instruction and insuring that all students learn."
