The Effect of Oxygen Exposure During Newborn Resuscitation on Lung Injury - University... - 0 views

  •
Completed study. In this feasibility study, hyperoxemia, as proximated by transcutaneous hemoglobin saturation with oxygen (Sp02), at the time of birth will cause sustained pulmonary oxidative stress as demonstrated by elevation of ulmonary protein carbonyl. Furthermore, this oxidative stress will be directly proportional to the imposed oxygen-burden during resuscitation at the time of birth. This study will give us information regarding the magnitude of protein carbonyl elevation in the preterm infant. With these results we will be able to 1. establish the technique for the running or protein carbonyl assays and 2. calculate an appropriate sample size for a future randomized control trial.

Effect of Protein Composition on Gastric Emptying - 0 views

European study to find out whether 4 different protein sources affect the rate of gastric emptying and electrofysiology in this group of children. The protein composition of nutrition may affect the rate of gastric emptying and gastric fysiology. This is especially important in children with neurologic impariment, who commonly rely on tube feedings, have feeding problems, nausea, vomiting, gastroesophageal reflux and delayed gastric emptying.

New Common Pathway in Neurodegenerative Disease is a Possible Door to a Point of No Ret... - 0 views

"The focus of the study is on the plentiful neurons that communicate with each other through the neurotransmitter glutamate. While glutamate is a necessary excitatory substance in the nervous system, in excess, it overstimulates and becomes toxic - excitotoxic - to neurons. Fortunately, neighboring astrocytes can mop up the excess via molecular transporters embedded in their outer membranes. The chief transporter is a protein called EAAT2. Earlier Rothstein's group showed that astroglia - and their EAAT2 protein - are critical for normal neuron activity. In test rats whose astroglia lack the EAAT2 equivalent there's not only a flood of toxic glutamate but a resulting neuron death that leads to paralysis."

Study of Abnormal Blood Clotting in Children With Stroke - 0 views

  •
Study will measure the frequency of several coagulation factor abnormalities (factor V Leiden, prothrombin 20210A, protein C, protein S, antithrombin III, and antiphospholipid antibodies) in children with a history of porencephaly and stroke, and will compare these to the prevalence of these mutations in population controls and family members.

Fragile X - Fragile X Syndrome - Mental Retardation - Genetic Defects - Autism - Learni... - 0 views

  •
Fragile X syndrome is the leading hereditary cause of developmental disabilities in all populations. The absence of a functional fragile X gene shuts off production of a special protein in the brain needed for normal cognitive development. Without this protein, children with the syndrome will never learn normally, despite hours of therapy and rehabilitation.
