The congressional legislation that created the National Eye Institute (NEI) mandates research on amelioration of the impact of impaired vision and blindness on health and well- being. The current NEI research program on visual impairment and its rehabilitation can be divided into six areas. Laboratory research is a fundamental yet often underappreciated pillar of research on visual impairment and blindness. A major goal of this area is to develop a scientific basis for understanding normal visual functioning that can be extended to explain the disabilities experienced by people with low vision, blindness, and other visual processing deficits.

NICHD program focuses on developing research that links PCCR medicine and science to the epidemiology, prevention, and treatment of childhood disabilities. The effort sponsors competitive research on all aspects of PCCR-including critical analyses of outcomes for children who are survivors of trauma, congenital anomalies, neonatal asphyxia, infectious processes, septic shock, and many other less common, but still devastating hildhood processes. The PCCR program also provides support for the Pediatric Critical Care Scientist Development Program (PCCSDP) , a national faculty training and career development program that develops successful pediatric critical care physician scientists conducting research to enhance the scientific understanding, clinical management, and rehabilitation of pediatric critical illness.

Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis (AIS) can change the respiratory dynamics and performance of the inspiratory and expiratory muscles, affecting ventilatory capacity. This was a randomized, controlled, open study to test the impact of a physiotherapeutic program of aerobic exercises on respiratory muscle strength, in patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. Patients with AIS were randomly assigned to the aerobic exercise-training program group or the no treatment group. There was a significant increase in Pimax and Pemax in the group which received physiotherapy.

Patients with epilepsy undergoing deep brain stimulation (DBS) have electroencephalograms (EEGs) recorded before and during their stimulation treatment. Subsequently we will be using computer-assisted analysis of the digitally-recorded EEG signals to assess the effects of DBS on the brain-wave frequency content and any abnormal seizure-like patterns that may be present.

National Survey of children with Special Halth Care Needs CSHCN - Data Resource Center - The purpose of The Data Resource Center for Child and Adolescent Health (DRC) is to advance the effective use of public data on the health and health-related services for children, youth and families in the United States. The DRC does this by providing hands-on access to national, state, and regional data findings as well as technical assistance in the collection and use of this data by policymakers, program leaders, advocates and researchers in order to inform and advance key child and youth health goals. The lab's research focuses on ischemic injury of the brain, in particular the neonatal/developing brain. Ischemia is the term given to a loss of blood supply and can arise due to obstruction of a blood vessel (leading to a stroke), or from factors that are currently not well understood but which produce the brain injury that underlies cerebral palsy.
