Citicoline Brain Injury Treatment (COBRIT) trial of the effects of 90 days of citicoline on functional outcome in patients with complicated mild, moderate and severe traumatic brain injury. Citicoline (also known as CDP-Choline) is a naturally occurring endogenous compound. Citicoline may have neuroprotective effects and may potentiate neuro-recovery which has led to the evaluation of it as treatment for both stroke and TBI in animal models and in human clinical trials.

Completed study sponsored by National Institutes of Health Clinical Center CC to identify clinical signs and symptoms critical for diagnosing swallowing disorders and will characterize swallowing problems in various patient populations, such as patients with Parkinson's disease, stroke, post-polio syndrome, multiple sclerosis and other conditions that cause swallowing abnormalities.

Study to develop a comprehensive spasticity management program which will then be developed for the individual. Clinical and outcome assessments at baseline and at follow-up will include measures of range of motion, global spasticity according to a modified Ashworth scale, and the time and number of staff required for the task. In addition, video will be obtained of caregivers performing each participant's care area tasks at baseline and follow-up to allow an independent external reviewer to judge task difficulty

Dr. Michelle Kuperminc of the University of Virginia is conducting a clinical study to determine what the best way is to measure Body Composition in children with Cerebral Palsy. Body composition is the amount of muscle, bone and fat in your body. There are several different ways we can measure body composition and would like to know which one is best for children with CP.

Patients with epilepsy undergoing deep brain stimulation (DBS) have electroencephalograms (EEGs) recorded before and during their stimulation treatment. Subsequently we will be using computer-assisted analysis of the digitally-recorded EEG signals to assess the effects of DBS on the brain-wave frequency content and any abnormal seizure-like patterns that may be present.

Clinical Trial - Omega-3 Fatty Acid supplementation to Prevent Preterm Birth in High Risk Pregnancies - A recently completed trial of weekly injections of 17 alpha hydroxyprogesterone caproate (17P) found significant effectiveness for 17P in preventing recurrent preterm birth. However, the group who received 17P in this trial still had a high rate of preterm birth. Several reports have shown that dietary supplementation of fish oil, which is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, reduces the risk of preterm birth. This trial tests whether adding the Omega-3 supplement to 17P therapy has the potential for further reducing the risk of preterm birth in women who have previously had a spontaneous preterm delivery. The trial will compare Omega-3 fatty acid with placebo in women receiving 17P therapy.

Review concluded that little information regarding either the nature or the treatment of speech breathing in children with cerebral palsy is available and that there is a definite need for basic research as well as treatment efficacy studies.
