15 years VIB: Event and 9 Books on the Behance Network - 1 views

  • VIB is a life sciences research institute, based in Flanders, Belgium. They perform basic research with a strong focus on translating scientific results into pharmaceutical, agricultural and industrial applications. For their fifteenth anniversary, we did the entire event branding, for which we used only chalk and a huge blackboard. For this event we also designed a box with nine books in it. For the books only we made more then 200 large chalk drawings.
  •
Branding for a life science research institute! Great layout, typography and especially the mediums used, emulating blackboard and using chalk to manually draw graphics of atoms & science related objects! Even guerilla campaigns around the compound of the venue of the conference talk! There are also wall displays & installations!

A Learning Science Alternative to Bloom's Taxonomy by Brenda Sugrue : Learning Solutions Magazine - 0 views

  •
In 2002, I proposed two alternatives to Bloom's Taxonomy for classifying objectives in order to design appropriate instruction and assessment (Sugrue, 2002). One was based on Merrill's content performance matrix (Merrill, 1983). The other I called the "pure performance" alternative, which did not require any classification.

3G powers Singapore school's 21st century classroom - 1 views

  •
NIE is mentioned in this article talking about mobile technology in schools. And the platform chosen was Windows.... The National Institute of Education of Singapore is assisting teachers with the development of customized curriculum in English, Science and Chinese that leverages the benefits of mobile, Internet-connected, learning devices and provides students with new learning opportunities that are not possible with paper and pencil. We co-design technology enabled lessons with the teachers and provide professional development to teachers that enable them to enact lessons using smartphones. It is critical to empower teachers to orchestrate the transformed classroom to support students' personalized learning," says Professor Looi Chee Kit of the National Institute of Education. All smartphones are equipped with MyDesk, a next-generation mobile learning platform tailored to leverage the capabilities of Microsoft's Windows Phone operating system. MyDesk enables each student to access his or her assignments, relevant websites that contain podcasts, textual material and video clips and educational applications, such as concept mapping, drawing and animating, to practice both self-directed and collaborative learning.

Startups are about to blow up the textbook - Fortune Tech - 0 views

  • "CK-12 basically looked at STEM [science, technology, engineering, and math] and broke it down into the 5,000 fundamental concepts, and they mapped them all together," Chakrapani says. "It's not about creating a textbook and every three years putting out a new edition so you can capture more revenue. It's about thinking how a student learns."
  • "And then you go back at the end of year with teachers, see what students struggle on, and revise and improve the book. Each year, the text gets better."
  • Free educational resources -- like a university course on Coursera, for example -- may be available for students to use at no cost, but students cannot reuse, remix, or repurpose that course content however they'd like. By contrast open-source materials like CK-12's materials are not only free, but can also be freely repurposed in any way a student or teacher sees fit.

Need To Create? Get A Constraint | Wired Science | Wired.com - 0 views

  • One of the many paradoxes of human creativity is that it seems to benefit from constraints. Although we imagine the imagination as requiring total freedom, the reality of the creative process is that it’s often entangled with strict conventions and formal requirements. Pop songs have choruses and refrains; symphonies have four movements; plays have five acts; painters still rely on the tropes of portraiture.

Interesting insight into the nature of creativity...

Google Body Browser - 0 views

  •
Google just launched Body Browser that let you explore the human body just like you explore the world with Google Earth. But, you need a browser that support WeBGL like Firefox4 beta and Google Chrome Beta. See the unofficial blog for Body Browser http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2010/12/google-body-browser.html. I have it tried it out.Impressive but not stable in some PC. Excellent tool for teaching staff in sport science, and biology.

Why Do Some People Learn Faster? | Wired Science | Wired.com - 2 views

  •
I llike my friend's summary: "The way we think affects the way we learn. If we think we passed a test because we're "smart", then we don't work so hard and learn less. If we think we passed a test because we "worked hard", then we work harder and learn more. And if we think making mistakes helps us learn (instead of making us look stupid), then we tend to learn more." I think this is one major reason why children can learn and master tough games so fast, but take forever to solve a Maths test problem.

Search Engines Change How Memory Works | Wired Science | Wired.com - 0 views

  • Thanks to search engines, most simple facts don’t need to be remembered. They can be accessed with a few keystrokes, plucked from ubiquitous server-stored external memory — and that may be changing how our own memories are maintained. A study of 46 college students found lower rates of recall on newly-learned facts when students thought those facts were saved on a computer for later recovery.
  • One small but intriguing effect in the new study involved students who were less able to identify subtly manipulated facts, such as a changed name or date, when drawing on memories they thought were saved online.

South Korea Says Good-Bye To Print Textbooks, Plans To Digitize Entire Curriculum By 2015 (video) | Singularity Hub - 0 views

  • Smart Education will change how we perceive textbooks,” South Korea’s Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Ju-Ho Lee, told the BBC. “The transfer from the traditional paper textbooks to digital textbooks will allow students to leave their heavy backpacks and explore the world beyond the classroom.”
