But, following the company's purchase by Swedish supercar manufacturer Koenigsegg, there's finally a new one. And it's about time, too. The original 9-5 started production way back in 1997 to replace the Saab 9000, and it hasn't been significantly upgraded at all since that time. Yep, 12 years with no generation update. It was wet and wild at the start and the finish, but the eighth annual Targa Newfoundland lived up to expectations of excitement for competitors and spectators alike as it made its way up the East Coast of the island Sept. 12-18. The eventual winners toiled away behind a couple of heavy-hitting leaders through the week, but once the boots had dried Friday Roy Hopkins and Adrienne Hughes moved up to their third overall win in a row.

Vaughn Gittin Jr., who this year traded his 2005 Mustang for a 2010 Mustang GT with a supercharged 4.6L engine, edged up the leader board at Sonoma's Infineon Raceway Aug. 8 with a solid seventh-place finish Aug. 22. The Top 10 finish added to Gittin's points total and moved him up two spots to third place overall with one round remaining in the 2009 Formula Drift Championship.

Wow, Nissan sure has been busy lately bringing their fleet of vehicles into the 21st century. Following their recent announcement of new fuel injector technology and approval for a $1.6 billion U.S. Department of Energy loan, they have laid out in detail what's coming in the near future. It will take a few more years of testing and the requisite safety approvals before Ford's laser ignition system is put into a production model, but the company has indicated that they hope to have the system in some of their premium vehicles (they'll probably start on a Lincoln model) within a few years.

News out of Japan yesterday has confirmed that Toyota will be supplying their rival car maker Mazda with components to build hybrid cars. Mazda's hybrid line won't be launched until 2013, but the company is already planning a production volume of 100,000 vehicles per year.

The Hyundai Veloster Concept, which premiered at the Los Angeles Auto Show back in 2007, will provide the base for a new "Eco-Sport" car to be released in the 2011 or 2012 model year. Hyundai representatives say that about 70-80% of the concept's styling and architecture will be incorporated into the new model, which promises quick, nimble driving with 40+ mpg.
