  • You can share any note in Evernote with other people—even if they aren't Evernote users! So it's actually great for this.
  • The second type of bookmark is the one I use for Evernote. It's bookmarking stuff that you want to reference later, but not the kind of stuff you visit every day. Does that make a little more sense?
  • Forgot to mention my third type of bookmark, which are full articles I send to Readability/Pocket/Instapepr for reading later. That's more for pleasure reading than reference, which is what I use Evernote for.

    I used to use Evernote a while ago for a staff writer/communications job I held in grad school. It helped a great deal with keeping my boss informed on my progress on news stories and for making suggestions. After reading this, I want to go back to it. I remember how organized it made me feel-- I'm sure I could use a lot more of that as a teacher! Thanks for sharing. Glad that Evernote is back on my radar-- with so much more to it than I remember!

    Thanks for sharing! I love her comment "The digital native is a myth." This is exactly what my colleagues and I have been noticing as our school went 1:1. Students understand how to use tech for social media and gaming but not as a tool for school.

    I certainly agree with this as being an effective way to language learning. We in the military community use the group/pair work approach for many reasons. Pair work keeps them interested and motivated to learn. It also makes better use of class time. I also think that when the students are ready for the OPI, they generally do better than if they were in a traditional classroom. As for assessment, yes it is more difficult, but it is up to us as instructors to find ways to measure the students' performance based on the interaction. Once the student is in country, it will be up to him/her to communicate with others. That will be the true test.

    I started using Storybird last year, and I love it. It is great to teach fantasy writing and to reinforce the elements of fiction. Using the sample stories for ESL students sounds like a great idea!

  • Koltay—and likely most of you who are reading this column—have observed how Web 2.0 and the use of folksonomies have created conditions that result in information overload. When we provide applications that let users manage information, and those users have limited to no awareness of knowledge organization for the Web, the information architectures that evolve for users and the entire system may be less than optimal. Since most users are not equipped to produce sound classification schemes or efficient top-down taxonomies on their own, their impact on any system creates what I call a literacy gap, depicted in Figure 6. Depending on the other signatures of information overload that play out in users’ interaction with a system, the consequences of their literacy gap can lead to information overload.       The above excerpt reminds me of a collaborative review project that we did in my class at the end of the last school year. We broke down each unit and lesson that we had covered into chunks and each student was supposed to make virtual flashcards (on quizlet.com) with their chunk of the material. Some students did great while others were absolutely lost while using the computers. It had a deleterious effect on the overall project. As I try to imagine implementing more web resources with the goal of productive communication and interaction in L2, I am troubled by the disparity of web/computer literacy among students. I don't mean to sound negative, but it is something I really struggle with. What about the students who lack the necessary skills?

      Even when working with teachers, we find this in workshops.  We tend to pair/group teachers, so they can help each other out - have you tried that with students?

      Yes, I did assign pairs. Some students are smartphone literate and seem to have little to no interest in anything desktop. Hmmm...perhaps I should try focusing on the ipads.

      Another good point! I love all the new technologies at our fingertips, but at some point it becomes a bit overwhelming.
