Learning through the Pandemic | AAUP - 1 views

  • Online distance learning is impersonal and has the potential to violate personal privacy. Even a matter as seemingly straightforward as turning on web cameras can raise difficult questions: Are cameras needed to humanize the lesson? Do they force an uninvited intimacy, revealing the realities of students’ and faculty members’ living situations?
    • greghutcheson

I'd love to hear debate on this in particular. Cameras on or off?...
  •
Important ruminations for instructors at urban public universities who are moving to online teaching. (Not specific to FL teaching per se, but it's well worth our bearing some of these caveats in mind....)

For those who are using Blackboard at school, this tutorial video will be very helpful.
  •
This can be a handy direction (in both video and writing) for using Voice Thread in Blackboard for people like me who are using Bb. Thanks for sharing!
  •
Due to issues I've encountered lately with opening sites and links that did not like my laptop, I've decided to stick with tools offered in BB which is what is used at my school. The explanations look clear enough for EVEN ME to figure out so I am thrilled to be able to access this tool AND use it!

  • Make Beliefs Comix doesn't require students to register on the site in order to create, share, and print their comics.
  • The thing that Make Beliefs Comix has been known for is its support for multiple languages. Previously, that feature was limited to six languages. That feature has been expanded to support any language that you can type on your keyboard.

How to Use Media to Enhance Teaching and Learning - 2 views

  • social media can also be used to enhance teaching and learning and it includes varied online technology tools that allow people to communicate easily via the internet to share information and resources.
  • demonstrations focused on contrasting cases help students achieve expert-like differentiation
  • Start small. Find one movie, song, or news source and incorporate it into your class. Expand once you are comfortable. Provide a clear link between what you want your students to learn and the media. Care must be taken provide the proper learning context. It takes time to integrate media effectively into a course. This is not edutainment, it is the conscious use of media to enable students to learn more. Use the subtitles feature for visual media. This is especially useful in focusing student attention on the words being said. Be prepared. Technology does not work 100% of the time so have a back up plan. If the media equipment does not work, go to plan B and continue on with your class without missing a beat. Evaluate student understanding. Students respond to incentives. If you require them to write a reaction paper, take a quiz, or place questions on your exams that relate to the media content they will pay more attention and learn more in the process. Stay legal. Extempore: A Speaking Practice App - The FLTMAG - 2 views

  • A Speaking Practice App
    • vallb001

I would say compared to Flipgrid the biggest thing is it has a more formal interface, perhaps more appropriate for assessment. I'm not sure if that is worth paying a license though.
  • creation of assignments, houses student responses, and provides a portal for teachers to provide feedback
  • production and recording of speech

  • One comment I often get from students is that they wish they had more frequent, but lower stakes oral assessments. A platform like Extempore begins to make this possible
    • greghutcheson

I'm beginning to see the virtue of lower-stakes oral assessments, but wonder if a tool such as VoiceThread can be configured to perform the same functions as Extempore. (I'd rather go with what we've got at my institution than make the case for purchasing a new site license....)

I really like the list in the article, but I realized how many possibilities there are for this tool after looking at the Disco Library tab on the top of the page (if you are looking in a PC). There are so many pre-made activities, and you can add them to your grids. Easy peasy, and you don't have to reinvent the wheel!

10 Student-Tested Chrome Extensions | Edutopia - 3 views

  • When activated, the extension searches through the text and highlights one or two important sentences
    • jenniferacarr

Interesting! (Especially given the parameters of our Diigo assignments...) I wonder, though, how the extension identifies which sentences are important. That can be such a subjective call to make.
  •
This is for the Chrome browser - many I didn't know about, but will definitely try!
  •
The Dualless extension that splits the screen sounds very useful for students . . . and teachers! I'm adding this extension right now!
