MedWire News - Prostate Cancer - No link between steroid hormones and prostate cancer G... - 0 views

  • “Whether this discrepancy was simply a results of different populations of men in these studies or, more likely, the absence of a consistent biologic relationship, our results suggest that steroid hormones are not a powerful driver of higher grade disease.”
  •
MedWire News: Among patients with newly diagnosed prostate cancer, there is no link between circulating steroid hormone levels and Gleason score, conclude US investigators.

New Lab Evidence Suggests Preventive Effect Of Herbal Supplement In Prostate Cancer - 0 views

  •
When these cell cultures were treated with red clover isoflavones, the androgenic effects of DHEA were reversed. "Something is happening in the prostate tissue microenvironment that is illustrating a potential cancer prevention effect from this supplement," said Arnold. Red clover isoflavones may modify androgenic effects in the prostate but much more work in the laboratory and clinic is needed to validate these effects.

MedWire News - Oncology - Serum 25(OH)D levels linked to prostate cancer prognosis - 0 views

  • The researchers conclude: “This study shows a strong association between 25(OH)D levels and cause-specific mortality in patients with prostate cancer. The strength of the association indicates that prostate cancer patients can benefit from increasing the level of serum 25(OH)D if it is below 50 nmol/l.”
  •
MedWire News: Serum levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D (25(OH)D) play a role in prostate cancer disease progression and are a potential prognostic indicator, Norwegian study findings suggest.

Vitamin D may inhibit prostate cancer growth - mechanism reported - 0 views

  •
The in vitro study, reported in the journal Carcinogenesis (Vol. 27, pp. 32-42), showed that vitamin D, in the form of the highly active 1alpha, 25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25-VD), inhibited the function of protease enzymes that are involved in tumour invasion. "We found that 1,25-VD decreased matric metalloproteinases (MMP-9) and cathepsins (CPs), while it [also] increased the activity of their counterparts, tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinase-1 (TIMP-1) and cathepsin inhibitors," wrote lead author Bo-Ying Bao from the University of Rochester and Taipei Medical University. "Mechanistic studies showed that 1,25-VD did not suppress MMP-9 expression at the transcriptional level, but reduced its mRNA stability," said Bao.

Older Men Urged to Consider a Drug to Prevent Prostate Cancer - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  •
For the first time, medical groups have issued guidelines that say healthy older men should consider taking a drug that may reduce their risk of developing prostate cancer, even if they're just among the worried well who go in for regular screenings.\n\nThe drug, finasteride, is already used to treat male pattern baldness and to shrink enlarged prostates. The new guidelines suggest that patients who are already taking finasteride for those conditions or who go for regular prostate cancer screening tests should discuss long-term treatment with the drug with their doctors.
