This site provides speeches about a variety of topics that are fascinating. It's possible to search by topic, languages, and duration to choose speeches that fit the needs of the ELL classroom. TED Ed also has educational materials and lesson ideas. These videos (or portions of the videos) would be great to use for a Cloze activity.

This website is helpful for vocabulary practice with ELLs. Teachers can use this site for whole-class vocabulary review, or students can practice independently. Each word set has about 5-10 words and multiple formats to practice listening, pronunciation, spelling, and matching words to the correct pictures.

Easy English News is a newspaper for ELL classrooms that focuses on current news but is written with simplified English and contains a glossary of definitions. This newspaper does require purchasing (see details on this site), but teachers can also find free resources on this site to use for extended practice.

This is a great resource for higher level ELL classes. The articles are written at about a 5th grade reading level but are also appropriate for adult learners. There are new non-fiction articles that are available for free each week, and there is an archive full of hundreds of articles. These articles lend themselves well to reading lessons that include vocabulary, comprehension, pronunciation, and class discussions.

An educational success program provided this list of 10 ways for students to become empowered learners. This list would be great for using with the adult ELLs at my school because it focuses on the strategies that they can use to develop their learning skills and to be more effective learners.

This video shows students what to expect when they show up for their U.S. citizenship interview and test. The video provides slower speaking and shows an image of the words that are spoken so that ELLs can understand better.

This website provides video lessons about the steps to becoming a U.S. citizen, the N-400 interview, the 100 civics questions, the reading/writing section of the test, the interview process, and new citizenship. ELLs can practice vocabulary, listening, and pronunciation in the context of the citizenship test. Students need to register for this website, but it use is free.

Burlington English is computer-based program that provides ELL instruction and feedback. Students are able to utilize this program in a classroom setting or at home to develop their English skills. This user-friendly program allows students to work at their own pace and receive quality feedback as they learn, practice, and develop their English skills.

I use this website for whole-class and individual phonics practice with my Pre-Literacy students. This is also a good website to use with adult learners who are just starting to learn how to use a computer because the site is user-friendly.

This website provides leveled readers (Levels A-G) that teachers and students can access for free. It's possible to print these out to create a classroom library, to use them for small group reading instruction, or to provide extension activities for independent reading. It's also possible to read these books digitally on the computer and to listen to the audio recording that accompanies each book. The topics work well for adult learners because they are about real-life experiences and daily life.
