Family: Pa. girl who got caroling wish has died - 0 views

  •
WEST READING, Pa. (AP) - A terminally ill girl who received support from thousands of Christmas carolers outside her home over the weekend died early on Christmas morning, her family said. Delaney Brown, 8, of West Reading "passed away quietly with her loving family by her side," family spokesman Christopher Winters said in a statement Wednesday. On Saturday night, thousands gathered outside her home in eastern Pennsylvania to fulfill her wish for a huge holiday singalong. The crowd cycled through holiday favorites such as "Frosty the Snowman," ''Rudolph the Red-nosed Reindeer" and "Jingle Bells" and ended with a chorus of "Happy Birthday" to the girl, who turned 8 on Friday, The Reading Eagle reported. Shortly after the caroling began, the family's Facebook page showed a picture of Delaney giving two thumbs up with the text, "I can hear you now!!! Love you!" Delaney, whose nickname is Laney, was diagnosed in May with a rare form of leukemia. The community held fundraisers to defray the cost of her medical expenses. An update posted Wednesay on the "Team Laney" Facebook page said: "My heart breaks right now. Our little angel on earth earned her pink glittery angel wings in heaven. She took her last breath at home in her bed at 3:10 surrounded by all her family and friends. I miss her so much already." "Laney was a wonderful, kind, and loving child, who brought so much joy to our lives," the family said. "Even as her illness progressed, Laney never stopped having faith, she continued to smile in spite of her pain, and she showed more concern for all of us than for herself." Her family also expressed gratitude for the support they had received from people all

UPS Overload Leaves Miffed Customers Short of Presents, Meals - 0 views

If your gifts didn't arrive on time to place under the tree this year, United Parcel Service might be to blame. The nation's largest package carrier failed to deliver all packages to consumers by Christmas Eve, deflating the holiday spirit for some irate customers. In a statement, UPS said it simply could not keep up with last-minute shipments as "the volume of air packages in our system exceeded the capacity of our network." READ: Global Champagne Sales Fall Flat The company spokeswoman called it "a perfect storm" of problems, blaming the delays on the normal surge in deliveries this time of year, the compressed shopping season, and the growth of e-commerce that increased demand for shipping right before the holiday. An ice storm that backed up air travel in Dallas also didn't help matters. Although UPS said only a small percentage of packages didn't make it to their destinations on time, consumers are not pleased. They took to social media, creating a series of hashtags including #UPSdelays and #UPSfail. @JeremyEich You didn't deliver mine and now my 10 year old doesn't get his present. #upsfail - The Mac (@themacinator) December 25, 2013 Thanks @UPS for ruining Xmas. Does a promised delivery date not mean anything to you? #upsfail - Tejas Mehta (@tpmehta) December 25, 2013 @UPS. @UPSHelp @UPS_News sadly the clock has struck midnight and you failed to deliver my package by 12/24. #UPSFail

Dish and DirecTV wish customers a Merry Christmas… by hiking prices - 0 views

  •
Pay TV service providers are among a few groups of companies that customers love to hate, and sometimes they go out of their way to remind us why. As families across the country come together to celebrate the holidays, satellite TV giants Dish Network and DirecTV are wishing them a Merry Christmas by hiking the cost of their service plans. In line with years past, both companies have confirmed that they will raise the prices of various television packages and increase service fees as well. The increases come at a time when "cord cutting," or canceling pay TV service in favor of online video streaming services, is becoming an increasingly common trend - to the point where cable companies are producing awful, awful anti-cord cutting campaigns as a last-ditch effort to win back lost subscribers and prevent current customers from leaving. DirectTV and Dish will each hike their service fees by between $2 and $5 per month, and they began notifying customers of the change just before Christmas. Beyond the higher service fees, however, the companies' TV package pricing will increase as well. In a note to clients picked up by CNNMoney, Nomura Equity analyst Adam Ilkowitz said that the cost of DirecTV's average TV package will increase by 4.4% next year, up from the 3.2% average increase customers saw at the beginning of this year. The base "Entertainment" plan will jump to $58 per month from $55, and the price of DirecTV's top package will increase $5 to $130 per month.

Americans say US Congress is worst ever: poll - 0 views

  •
Washington (United States) (AFP) - Two thirds of Americans say the current Congress is the worst ever, while three quarters slammed the "do-nothing" legislature, a CNN/ORC International poll found Thursday. The negative attitudes were expressed toward leading lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, with 52 percent saying the policies of Democrats would move the country in the wrong direction, compared to 54 percent for Republican policies. And 54 percent of respondents said the same thing about the policies of President Barack Obama, a Democrat. The 113th Congress did pass a budget agreement before its holiday recess, but less than 60 bills have been signed into law during its first year. And with a continued political stalemate likely in 2014, when mid-term elections will take place, the current Congress is poised to become one of the least productive in at least the past four decades, CNN noted. A total of 68 percent of those questioned said the current Congress was the worst in their lifetime, with only 28 percent disagreeing. The negative outlook toward Congress "exists among all demographic and political subgroups. Men, women, rich, poor, young, old -- all think this year's Congress has been the worst they can remember," CNN polling director Keating Holland said. "Older Americans -- who have lived through more congresses -- hold more negative views of the 113th Congress than younger Americans. Republicans, Democrats and independents also agree that this has been the worst session of Congress in their lifetimes."

Wearing an orange coat and black fur hat, Elizabeth arrived for the service at St. Mary Magdelene Church on the estate, accompanied by her granddaughter Zara Phillips, who is currently pregnant with her first child. Many of the well-wishers gathered near the church had hoped to catch a glimpse of Prince George, the newest member of the royal family. While the young prince was nowhere to be seen, his parents - Prince William and his wife, Kate - arrived at the church holding hands. "We've had a good morning with George and I can't wait until next year when he's bigger," William told the crowd following the service. Bellatorra Skin Care CEO Nathan Halsey announced a global expansion plan in 2014 to introduce his new beauty brand's anti-aging, scientifically-based skincare products to an international audience. Bellatorra Skin Care has a primary focus in the European, Asian and Australian markets and this strategic program kicked off when the brand received approval from Singapore's Health Sciences Authority for the distribution of Bellatorra Skin Care products, marking the first step in increasing the brand's international retail presence. This strategic island named Singapore was first inhabited by fishermen and pirates, and later became part of the Sumatran Empire of Srivijaya. But throughout the 14th century, Singapore became involved in a war between Thailand and the Majapahit Empire where they were fighting for control of the Malay Peninsula. This war did not go well for Singaporeafterwards Singapore fell under Majapahit rule before being seized by Portugal in the early 1500s. In 1819 Singapore was transformed into a British trading colony as well becoming one of Britain's most important naval bases.
