As families across the country come together to celebrate the holidays, satellite TV giants Dish Network and DirecTV are wishing them a Merry Christmas by hiking the cost of their service plans. In line with years past, both companies have confirmed that they will raise the prices of various television packages and increase service fees as well. The increases come at a time when "cord cutting," or canceling pay TV service in favor of online video streaming services, is becoming an increasingly common trend - to the point where cable companies are producing awful, awful anti-cord cutting campaigns as a last-ditch effort to win back lost subscribers and prevent current customers from leaving. DirectTV and Dish will each hike their service fees by between $2 and $5 per month, and they began notifying customers of the change just before Christmas. Beyond the higher service fees, however, the companies' TV package pricing will increase as well. In a note to clients picked up by CNNMoney, Nomura Equity analyst Adam Ilkowitz said that the cost of DirecTV's average TV package will increase by 4.4% next year, up from the 3.2% average increase customers saw at the beginning of this year. Washington (United States) (AFP) - Two thirds of Americans say the current Congress is the worst ever, while three quarters slammed the "do-nothing" legislature, a CNN/ORC International poll found Thursday. The negative attitudes were expressed toward leading lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, with 52 percent saying the policies of Democrats would move the country in the wrong direction, compared to 54 percent for Republican policies. And 54 percent of respondents said the same thing about the policies of President Barack Obama, a Democrat. The 113th Congress did pass a budget agreement before its holiday recess, but less than 60 bills have been signed into law during its first year. And with a continued political stalemate likely in 2014, when mid-term elections will take place, the current Congress is poised to become one of the least productive in at least the past four decades, CNN noted. A total of 68 percent of those questioned said the current Congress was the worst in their lifetime, with only 28 percent disagreeing. The negative outlook toward Congress "exists among all demographic and political subgroups. Men, women, rich, poor, young, old -- all think this year's Congress has been the worst they can remember," CNN polling director Keating Holland said. "Older Americans -- who have lived through more congresses -- hold more negative views of the 113th Congress than younger Americans. Republicans, Democrats and independents also agree that this has been the worst session of Congress in their lifetimes."

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - For years, U.S. officials have pointed to the improvements in the everyday lives of Afghans made possible by billions of dollars in aid from the United States and elsewhere. In Afghanistan, people now live 20 years longer on average than under Taliban rule, they say; 7 million more children attend school and women are 80 percent less likely to die in childbirth. The specter of an abrupt departure of all U.S. and NATO soldiers from Afghanistan at the end of next year now imperils these gains, they warn, and endangers progress on the massive development challenges that remain. Unless the Obama administration can persuade Afghan President Hamid Karzai to sign a security pact that would permit a modest U.S. force to remain beyond 2014, the United States is almost certain to drastically scale back aid to Afghanistan. That would force aid groups to work under more precarious security conditions and compete for scantier aid dollars. It would be "a complete catastrophe" to pull the entire U.S. force from Afghanistan next year, said Andrew Wilder, who directs Afghanistan and Pakistan programs at the U.S. Institute of Peace and spent years working in the region. A deterioration in security conditions would hamper oversight of aid projects, possibly making a deeply skeptical Congress even more reluctant to fund Afghan aid. A smaller staff at the U.S. embassy in Kabul would also make it more difficult to sustain many U.S. aid programs. NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - One of the most common types of knee surgery performed in the U.S. is no more effective than fake surgery, at least for the first year, according to a new study. The new evidence should give doctors pause before they try to repair the meniscus, which cushions the bones of the knee, according to the Finnish doctors behind the research published in the New England Journal of Medicine. The experiment involved 146 volunteers whose knee pain appeared to be caused by wear and tear of that cushion. None of the participants had a recognized injury or osteoarthritis, both situations for which the surgery is already known to be ineffective. After 12 months, the average improvement among the people who received real surgery and those who got "sham" surgery was essentially the same, said the research team, led by Dr. Teppo Jarvinen of University of Helsinki. There was no significant improvement in knee pain after exercise and no sizable improvement in the likelihood that a patient would require subsequent knee surgery. But Dr. Craig Bennett, chief of sports medicine at the University of Maryland Medical Center, cautioned that the findings should not be over-generalized. One problem, he told Reuters Health in a telephone interview, is that such "sham" surgery is, in fact, a surgical procedure with potential benefit. People with knee pain who seem to be candidates for meniscal repair may be suffering because of debris in a swollen knee joint. "If you scope the knee (without touching the cushion), that will often help even if you don't completely address the torn meniscus issue," he said.
