Tunnel Through! - Activity - www.TeachEngineering.org - 0 views

  •
"Tunnel Through! Contributed by: Integrated Teaching and Learning Program, College of Engineering, University of Colorado at Boulder Photo shows two men looking at metal prongs coming through the side of a mountain with a crumbling rock pile in front of them. Workers look at the TBM cutterhead after it reached daylight in April 1997, after a 2.5-year journey excavating through Yucca Mountain, NV. TBM is a tunnel boring machine. Students apply their knowledge about mountains and rocks to transportation engineering, with the task of developing a model mountain tunnel that simulates the principles behind real-life engineering design. Student teams design and create model tunnels through a clay mountain, working within design constraints and testing for success; the tunnels must meet specific design requirements and withstand a certain load. Breaking Through The Clouds - A Documentary About The 1929 First Women's Air Derby - 0 views

  •
"Amelia Earhart's notoriety was established the previous year when she became the first woman to cross the Atlantic. Earhart felt her celebrity status was unfounded since she was only a passenger on the famed flight. Entering the race would add credibility to her as a pilot as well as prove the safety of aviation as a mode of transportation. "

Suburban Pocket Airports, Future Of GA? - 0 views

  •
Small electric aircraft could solve the transportation problems of the near future by providing quick hops between neighborhood airports, according to a presentation at the Future of Electric Vehicles conference held earlier this month in San Jose, Calif. The "pocket" airports could support 120 operations per hour, limited to small air-taxi vehicles only, while occupying only two acres in urban areas

NASA Concept Plane Designed to Fly Sideways - Core77 - 0 views

  •
"The "Supersonic bi-directional flying wing" has wings of alternating length at each compass point and therefore can solve both situations, by taking off in one orientation, then essentially flying sideways when it's time to go supersonic. I'd like to see video of how this happens in motion, but from what I can see in the stills, it looks like the dual engines up top determine the direction of flight, and that the rest of the plane rotates around them.
