The Town That Was is a documentary film of Centralia, Pennsylvania, a once thriving mining town until 1962 when the ming caught fire and continued burning until the mid 1980s.

I thought this was a great documentary. They talk about the governments lack of help with the town's mine fire. Instead of the fire being put out soon, it lasted for many, many years destroying the town in the meantime.

"In order to fully understand the geographic concept of natural resource use, students should learn about the ways that resource extraction affects the physical and human landscape. In this lesson, they will discuss how a specific economic activity in a region can facilitate the creation of towns, which often turn into ghost towns if the economic activity ends."

While Major league baseball still kept playing, it was Minor League baseball that was suffering. It was this group of women ball players that kept the small towns from falling during war time.

This is a really well-done documentary done by a student in honor of her grandfather, a miner. Good find Kristina!

If I had it to do over, I would have become an epidemiologist. Maps combined with public health. Science and education. Solution oriented research with direct social justice implications. Sell your students on this field with this lovely zombie apocalypse activity.
