The Australian Curriculum v5.0 Information and Communication Technology (ICT) capabilit... - 0 views

  • he Melbourne Declaration on the Educational Goals for Young Australians (MCEETYA 2008) recognises that in a digital age, and with rapid and continuing changes in the ways that people share, use, develop and communicate with ICT, young people need to be highly skilled in its use.

"n the Australian Curriculum, students develop ICT capability as they learn to use ICT effectively and appropriately to access, create and communicate information and ideas, solve problems and work collaboratively in all learning areas at school, and in their lives beyond school. The capability involves students in learning to make the most of the digital technologies available to them, adapting to new ways of doing things as technologies evolve and limiting the risks to themselves and others in a digital environment. The Melbourne Declaration on the Educational Goals for Young Australians (MCEETYA 2008) recognises that in a digital age, and with rapid and continuing changes in the ways that people share, use, develop and communicate with ICT, young people need to be highly skilled in its use. To participate in a knowledge-based economy and to be empowered within a technologically sophisticated society now and into the future, students need the knowledge, skills and confidence to make ICT work for them at school, at home, at work and in their communities. Information and communication technologies are fast and automated, interactive and multimodal, and they support the rapid communication and representation of knowledge to many audiences and its adaptation in different contexts. They transform the ways that students think and learn and give them greater control over how, where and when they learn."

#GameOn for online safety | Education Review - 0 views

  •
"Australia's communications regulator has today launched its new cybersafety videos, #GameOn, to classrooms across the country. The Australian Communications and Media Authority says #GameOn is a series of five intertwined stories that follow a group of school friends who find themselves in situations that catch them off-guard and show them the consequences of making poor decisions online. The stories, which are targeted towards 8- to 12-year-olds, tackle topics including cyberbullying, excessive gaming, sharing passwords, free downloads and online friends."

Wow!! "This Aboriginal pedagogy framework is expressed as eight interconnected pedagogies involving narrative-driven learning, visualised learning processes, hands-on/reflective techniques, use of symbols/metaphors, land-based learning, indirect/synergistic logic, modelled/scaffolded genre mastery, and connectedness to community. But these can change in different settings."

Beginning-of-year Activities - Classroom 2.0 - 0 views

  •
I consciously overplan the first few days. The worst possible first-day scenario is to arrive unprepared. Over the years, I've collected a number of first-day activity ideas - far too many to use. I've pared down the activities based on the following considerations: My first goal is to build classroom community, making all students feel comfortable and successful. My second goal is to establish routine. My third goal is to formatively assess students' current levels in all subject areas. It's never too early to begin thinking about parent night. I choose activities that accomplish at least two of the goals stated above.

Digital Citizenship Poster Now Available in 6 Languages - 0 views

  •
Last month we posted a free digital citizenship poster for our educator community to download. The response we received after posting it was incredible - more than 20,000 downloads in the first week! After publishing the post, many international educators requested a version of the poster in their native language and today we're please to announce that it's now available in Dutch, French, German, Greek and Spanish. In addition to these new languages, we also created a black and white version for those looking for a more "printer-friendly" version.

Though we've talked about digital citizenship in the past, since we're constantly using technology and interacting in digital communities, an ongoing discussion about digital citizenship isn't a waste of time, but rather a necessity.

Technology has been changing the way people learn and interact for thousands of years. Many researchers argue that major innovations adopted by society have an effect on the structure of the human brain. There is little doubt that the Internet has changed the way people find information and the way they communicate. Changes to the way that students learn, and probably what they learn, need to follow.

"introduced by ABC3 presenter Kayne Tremills, the stories tackle topics including cyberbullying, excessive gaming, sharing passwords, free downloads and online friends. Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Communications, Paul Fletcher, MP, has welcomed the release of #GameOn. 'In my conversations with teachers and parents, I am regularly told that they have to spend significant time in dealing with cyberbullying and disputes on social media,' Mr. Fletcher said. 'In line with the Australian government's commitment to enhance online safety for children, I commend #GameOn as a tool you can use with your children or students to raise awareness of online safety issues, and to help students navigate the online world safely and with confidence.'"

Need a Job? Invent It - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • That is a tall task. I tracked Wagner down and asked him to elaborate. “Today,” he said via e-mail, “because knowledge is available on every Internet-connected device, what you know matters far less than what you can do with what you know. The capacity to innovate — the ability to solve problems creatively or bring new possibilities to life — and skills like critical thinking, communication and collaboration are far more important than academic knowledge. As one executive told me, ‘We can teach new hires the content, and we will have to because it continues to change, but we can’t teach them how to think — to ask the right questions — and to take initiative.’
  •
WHEN Tony Wagner, the Harvard education specialist, describes his job today, he says he's "a translator between two hostile tribes" - the education world and the business world, the people who teach our kids and the people who give them jobs. Wagner's argument in his book "Creating Innovators: The Making of Young People Who Will Change the World" is that our K-12 and college tracks are not consistently "adding the value and teaching the skills that matter most in the marketplace."
