BCTF Researcher Charlie Naylor published this paper in January 2013 in reaction to a presentation by Bill Standeven and Rod Allen from the Ministry on the government's new directions in Special Education which include a focus on UDL/RTI. Charlie, who worked with the BC UDL project on action research strategies, laments the demise of the BC UDL Project and endorses UDL strongly. (see page 4).

For now, I am sticking to the UDL guidelines as the model I use when advocating any educational practice including the use of technology.

Awesome website with activties and reading for students who need picture support. For example, the science sites could be used to do research that parallels what the class is doing.

Sqworl is a free app that allows you to create a public page on the web that contains thumbnails of several webpages. You can then share the url. This would be useful for making a custom homepage, lists of workshop resources, or safe sites for kids to browse when doing research. It's very easy to set up...you just name a group and then paste in the url's and a short title or description of the links you want. Sqworl creates the thumbnail pics which you can drag around to reorder.

Excellent site for kids to do research about dinosaurs even if they did spell Paleozoic and Mesozoic wrong.

This is a subscription site, but it does have a free trial. They have high quality educational videos and research to back up its educational effectiveness. The pricing is posted on their website. In BC, ERAC has special United Streaming pricing.

The resource provides fully interactive, engaging game environments and high-quality learning material tailored to the National Curriculum. This resource has been created by the University of Cambridge Department of Engineering, with a grant from the HEFCE Aspirations Fund and the University of Cambridge Active Community fund.

There are excellent quality instructional videos on everything imaginable here. I searched for life cycle and got 106 educational videos on the life cycle of frogs, butterflies, bananas, stars, etc. The geography section has an astounding collection of Canada videos introducing the provinces and the geographical regions. HowStuffWorks explains hundreds of subjects, from car engines to lock-picking to ESP, using clear language and tons of illustrations. We do the research so you don't have to.
