This tutorial is well done. She explains the basic movement needed to start vibrato, uses close-up screen shots so that the viewer can see exactly what her wrist and fingers are doing, and shows the progression from beginning vibrato to more advanced vibrato. She also explains what beginning student vibrato should sound like. I think this is a great video for students who are starting to learn vibrato.

Great example of a way to build a supportive community of students and parents through being personal at times when our daily communication methods become almost entirely based in text-form.

Articles about recruiting students into a choral program

This article takes a look at how Chinese students prepare for the future while still focusing on right now, and how we as American students can connect with them through our common language, music & music education. I find it interesting to learn about how other countries our practicing, & learning music and what they are doing to prepare for the future. And maybe as Americans we can be taught something new, and strive to work even harder through their example.

This article is exactly what the title states. These authors recommended different strategies for creating those safe places, so students young and old feel free to be themselves and perform despite any fears. Overall, the article is targeted toward eliminating those fears that students may have so nothing is stopping them from their full potential. I think the main point of this article is a great thing to keep in mind and remember as future music teachers.

Monday, 25 August 2014 Learning to play an instrument is learning to practise. And learning to practise is learning to listen. My nine-year-old son has just passed his ABRSM Grade 1 cello exam. He has an excellent teacher at a state-funded London school, and he has the advantage (even if sometimes he doesn't see it that way) of also learning how to sing and play the piano.

Several schools, including ones in high-poverty areas, are making art critical to the learning of more academic subjects. They're seeing remarkable student achievement and improvement! This is a pretty cool article about art in schools and how it's very important. The same concepts can be applied to music!

This "tutorial" was actually the unedited taping of a class instructing djembe students how to play slaps and tones on djembes. The information is great, and of excellent quality. However, the video needs some major editing and the instructor is very hard to hear.

The information provided is OK and the overall set up is alright for keeping the performer anonymous. However, it takes way too long to make a point and the person demonstrating is obviously a beginner. I would use this in my class to have the student critique the person but not to learn from it. (this would be a betweener...it is ok info/set up but poor demonstration)

This tutorial is helpful because it shows he steps clearly, quickly, and in a way students of any age can understand. It is also nice that it is in a home setting, not a shop.

A couple years ago my high school students actually transcribed/arranged this for percussion ensemble and taught themselves how to play it. The first time I heard them play it was at our final concert in May.

This is a really good article by Dave Werden about purchasing euphoniums. The information here can be applied towards a lot of other instruments as well which makes it an excellent resources for both teachers and students.

Have you "Flipped your classroom" yet? The flipped classroom is a useful technique that has moved lectures out of the class, and onto digital media. In doing so, teachers can drastically increase interaction time with their students.

Clay Chaplin, from the California Institute of the Arts, discusses learning recording techniques. Chaplin stresses listening. He also explains that one can learn it from scratch. Chaplin points out that the best way to learn is through experience. The room is open all the time. Students should learn while they can still make mistakes.
