Development Groups: Charity - CARE - 0 views

  • Smallholder dairy farmers in Bangladesh, most of them women, are enjoying success through accessing a stronger dairy value chain.
  • CARE works in 87 countries around the world to support over 900 poverty-fighting development and humanitarian-aid projects.
  •
CARE is an international charity organization focused on improving the quality of life and development of people, increasing their HDI, that I would like to support.  The charity would improve the quality of life and development of people (increase their HDI) by helping people, women to be more successful in their day-to-day life, and by supporting certain projects that work to end the existence of poverty, and that support humans.  By helping women and other people and being against poverty they are working to increase countries' HDI's because if women are given more help, then they could know ways they could improve their life (e.g. getting a job, attending classes, etc.).  This would help the economy, thus improving their country's HDI.

UNICEF is a international organization which helps children in developing countries to overcome obstacles. These obstacles are usually in the form of poverty, violence, discrimination, and disease. By helping the children with these issues they will end up living a longer, healthier life.

UNICEF would be a great organization to support because if it works to fight poverty, the country would hopefully become wealthier, and the HDI would improve.

Women's Global Education Project - 1 views

  •
The Women's Global Education Project is attempting to destroy the barriers keeping girls out of school, especially in remote, rural areas. As of now, they primarily work in Africa, providing scholarship support and encouraging family involvement and community awareness. One of the main factors that determine development is access to knowledge. It is also known that, generally, more gender equality contributes to better development. By working to improve both of these things in struggling countries, the Women's Global Education Project in helping to raise the HDI's of these countries.

The United World Schools Charity reaches out to children living in the poorest and least developed regions and gives them the opportunity to receive an education. This charity is working to improve development in countries where the children receive a below-basic education. This charity builds schools in these regions and they provide support to the communities. United World Schools aims to have ensured 50,000 children and young adults can read, write, and count by 2018/19 in these remote and post-conflict areas.

Unicef - 0 views

Unicef, an international organization, will, in the long run, improve development. Unicef's priorities is to educate the young, save them from terrible diseases like Malaria, and to save them from war-torn, or resource lacking countries. Moreover, Unicef strives to put an end to gender inequality, and HIV/AIDS. Unicef operates in about 196 countries to improve those factors that can lead to development. Unicef is seen, for example, in Ishmael Beah's book, "A Long Way Gone" saving Sierra Leone children from being child soldiers for the rebels and army. Beah was saved by Unicef, when he was a child soldier. Unicef, by improving the factors above, could improve a country's GII, Child Mortality Rate, Life Expectancy, and It's Crude Death Rate, which could in return improve a country's HDI. This would be great because by improving a country's HDI, that country could start to transition to a developed country that improves socially, economically, and politically. This would change the world we live in today. Unicef is an organization that I would definitely help.

Alex - I like how you specifically connected Unicef to various elements of human geography including Beah's work. Thank you for the extra effort!

"The Global Partnership for Education is the only multilateral partnership devoted to getting all children into school for a quality education in the world's poorest countries." 58 million elementary-school aged children were out of school in developing countries in 2012. The Global Partnership for Education seeks to coordinate a global effort to provide a quality education to boys and girls alike, putting the poorest and most vulnerable first. They want to see a quality education for all children so that they are able to live up to their potential and contribute to society. The GPE is made up of 60 developing countries, donor governments, international organizations, the private sector, teachers, and civil society or NGO groups. They help their developing country partners to prepare solid plans for the improvement of education. Members mobilize to achieve the goals and enroll more children in school for a better education.

Education is a basic human right. All people around the globe should have equal access to education. The reason I really like this charity is because it focuses on education. Education | VSO international main goal is to provide education to all, and most importantly ones who are at a disadvantage, including women, the sick and ethnic minorities. They work directly with their local and international partners to increase the number of qualified teachers, improve leadership and management of education services, increase community engagement, and promote evidence-based policy and practice. DKT International Family Planning and HIV Prevention - 0 views

  •
This nonprofit organization, DKT International, has been promoting family planning and HIV/AIDS prevention through social marketing since1989. DKT has 21 programs in 19 countries around the world. They cater their prices to the poorest country's needs going down as low as 2 cents per contraceptive. In doing this and providing family planning and some education, they are making contraceptives and HIV/AIDS prevention more easily accessible for everyone. Overall, this organization will help to keep populations from rising as fast, help to lower the number of child and mother deaths and to lower the total fertility rate.

Heifer International is an organization that helps countries all over the world. Their goal is to bring people tools, education and livestock so that there is a positive change. To do this, they educate people, give families animals to help their financial and hunger problem, give women empowerment, improve water sanitation and create sustainable farming. I personally believe that this charity is amazing because it doesn't focus on one aspect of lives but many. They focus on food, water, wealth, health and equality. It is an amazing charity.

MAP International is a charity that helps over 115 countries around the world promote health (physical, economic, social, emotional and spiritual health). It helps give hope and is trying to conquer HIV and AIDs as well as malaria. If developing countries are able to overcome these major health obstacles, is will improve their standard of living as well as their HDI. They will become more developed. MAP International provides free medical supplies as well as knowledge about sanitation. They also help get people clean water which would improve health even more.

Save the Children is an organization that aids countries all over the world, some that are struggling with extreme poverty and sickness. For example, 66% of people living in Niger are living below the poverty line. Save the Children helps countries like Niger to have happier healthier children, which will eventually increase the life expectancy rate and lower child mortality rates.

Charity:Water - 0 views

Charity:water is a nonprofit organization that brings clean and safe drinking water to people in developing countries. In this article charity:water has helped Uganda put in safe water wells for the women to collect in a more efficient way to bring back to their families. Without this, the women would continue to walk three miles a day to a putrid river or a disease infested swamp. This brought disease and death more many children and families. But with the help from charity:water, the CDR will improve along with HDI.

Any countries surprise you on this list?
  •
Why are these places not in the bottom ten?
  •
Qatar and Kuwait do not surprise me as in they have an abundance of oil underground that is part of one of the biggest industries in the world. Sitting at the throne of the oil kingdom, I would expect those two to have high per capita income.

IS the US in favor of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea ? - 1 views

  • The United States objected to the provisions of Part XI of the Convention on several grounds, arguing that the treaty was unfavorable to American economic and security interests. Due to Part XI, the United States refused to ratify the UNCLOS, although it expressed agreement with the remaining provisions of the Convention. From 1983 to 1990, the United States accepted all but Part XI as customary international law, while attempting to establish an alternative regime for exploitation of the minerals of the deep seabed.
