The foreign born from Africa by county in the United States, 2000 - 0 views

  •
There aren't many foreign born Africans residing in the United States. The ones that do live in the United States live in either New York City, Washington D.C., or Southern California. I believe this happens because those areas are major cities in the US.
  •
Also when Africans migrate to the States, they may look for a lifestyle change in the city which may not be as common in Africa, just another though......

State Proportion of the Vietnamese-Born Population in the United States - 0 views

  •
California is the state with the most Vietnamese-born residents mostly because of the major ports there (like Los Angeles) and because it is one of the closest states to Asia. Also, the climate and job opportunities could be influencing the people of Vietnam to migrate great lengths to get to the US.
  •
I agree that most Vietnamese-born residents live in California because of its proximity to Asia and its encompassment of numerous job opportunities. I find it interesting that the second area with the largest Vietnamese-born population is in Houston, Texas because I expected it to be somewhere in the Northeast due to the attraction of urban migration.

Cities with 1,000,000 or More Foreign-Born Residents - 1 views

It is interesting that most areas with more than 1 million or more foreign born residents are around coastline. I would believe that this is because that it easier to travel to large cities near the coastline rather in the middle of the country.

I agree with your statement and would also add that there are high foreign born in big cities like Dallas, London, and Moscow.

I thinks it is very interesting that the US has the most cities by far. It reminds me of the map we saw with the arrows pointing to continents. Overall, most people were migrating to the United States. We really do have the image of "the land of the free and the home of the brave". People really believe they can make a living here.

BBC News - Mapping Mediterranean migration - 1 views

  • Every year thousands of people, many fleeing conflict and instability in Africa and the Middle East, risk their lives in small, often decrepit vessels while trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea to European territories.
  • Syrians fleeing the country's civil war are also making the journey.
  • Migration charities believe that as many as 20,000 people may have died at sea trying to reach Europe in the last two decades.

Migration Trends of the Future | TIME.com - 2 views

  • People join mass migrations not just for economic reasons but also because of personal choice and the forces of history.

Many immigrants leave their country for economic reasons, but many others also leave because they are in a mass movement, escaping wars, or personal choices.
  •
We have already touched on the topic that a large amount of immigrants today are from Asia and Latin America. In the future it is expected that America will see an increase of immigrants that are skilled workers. These mass migrations in the future will most likely not be for economic reasons, but will be for personal reasons or forces in history.

Germany: Estimates of Net Number of Migrants - 1 views

It looks like the most immigrants into Germany are from neighboring countries such as Poland, Russia, and other European and Middle Eastern countries. I would love to see immigration data from the holocaust era. It would be interesting to see emigration from that time period as well.

It seems as though there have been very few migrants in recent years. I wonder fit his has anything to do with Germany's decreasing population. No on is migrating there

This makes sense. Many cities are located in these areas. Also, Texas and Calif. are situated near Mexico.
    • Veronica Werner

The majority of Mexican-born immigrants seem to be distributed near the Mexican border, as well as along the East Coast.  Large cities, especially those in the southern US, attract the most Mexican immigrants.  States with few cities and/or a significant distance from Mexico have fewer immigrants.
  •
Wow this is very unusual to me because I expected there to be more Mexican born people in Texas because it is on the border but instead there are more in California which is still a ways from Mexico.

Most of the Cuban-Born population is located in the southern part of Florida with small amounts to the western area of the United States and New York.
  •
As depicted by the map, most Cuban Americans are born in Florida, especially in Miami. This is due to the proximity to Cuba from Florida. The second largest state having Cuban-born residents includes New York because the numerous job opportunities in the city provide attract migrants, therefore "pulling" them in.

Foreign born in the US - 1 views

  •
This map makes sense because the most foreign born Mexicans are near the border. The most people are located right on the border between Texas and Mexico. There are also many people located up around California and farther in the interior of Texas. Once again this make sense because as immigrants come into the United States they will move farther into the state they entered in. I also noticed that there are many immigrants situated in Florida because this is a similar climate which makes the move less hard. Also there are jobs available.

  • Use our maps to learn about the settlement patterns and concentration of various immigrant populations in the United States in 2010 and 2000.
    • Veronica Werner

These maps, individually, are useful for recognizing total immigration patterns in the U.S.: where immigrants are distributed and where they are most likely to be concentrated.  However, a new level of understanding can come from comparing the maps to each other.  For example, comparing where immigrants from Mexico are distributed to the overall distribution of immigrants shows specific characteristics of those immigrants.  It is interesting to see what countries are included on the maps; they seem to be mostly from either Latin America or Asia.

Fertility and living standards: Go forth and multiply a lot less | The Economist - 7 views

I found this very surprising. As first I believed, that women all over the country decided how many kids they want. Then as I read on, I realized that there are many factors to the amount of kids a women will have. First, many women in lesser developed countries are not very well educated. They do not have much knowledge about contraception, specifically birth control. Along with this idea, many women do not have access to birth control, either it is not available where they live, or it is too expensive for the family to afford. Finally, I realized from the video that we watched previously in class that sometimes due to the lack of education a woman has, they do not have a say  in the family planning. If the husband wants more kids than there will be more kids. All in all, I found this statistic very shocking and I took away that many people don't have the ability to stop having children which is very disappointing especially since most of the time, this occurs in poor areas and the family is struggling already.
    • Mr. Reidy

Excellent commentary, Nicole! Great job citing examples from the text and adding your own insight.
  • By about 2020, the global fertility rate will dip below the global replacement rate for the first time.
  • One study in 2002 estimated that as many as a quarter of all pregnancies in developing countries in the 1990s were unintended.
    • Veronica Werner

This was the most surprising piece of information because it shows how preventable our uncontrollable population growth could be. If developing countries all had available contraceptives, the world's population would not nearly be so high. Unfortunately, the solution is not so easy. Women in those developing (stage 2) countries would need to be educated and allowed to use contraceptives. Societies that valued more children would need to transition into wanting fewer. Even though many women want fewer children, it will require a shift in culture and society before this is actually accomplished. In many developed countries, this shift has already taken place, and the population growth rate there is decreasing. This gives hope that population growth in developing countries may not be such a problem in the future.

Annual Immigration to the United States: The Real Numbers - 2 views

    • Veronica Werner

This fact sheet shows data about the numbers of immigrants into the U.S. per year, which is useful on its own.  However, it also uses this data to identify problems with the official numbers of immigrants that are recorded.  The tables and graphs serve to illustrate that there is a difference between the official statistics of immigrants and the actual immigration.  The problem is because the government only counts people gaining legal status, which excludes illegal immigrants and includes those moving from temporary to permanent citizenship.
    • Veronica Werner

Note: I could not highlight a pdf, but I would have highlighted "The Department of Homeland Security (DHS_ reports that there were 1.1 million "immigrants,"...However, this number does not accurately reflect actual levels of immigration to the United States." "DHS statistics count "immigrants" as those who obtain lawful permanent resident (LPR) status in the country in any particular year."
