Dick Hickock, Perry Smith killed 'In Cold Blood' 50 years ago - 1 views

  •
Again discusses the minds of Dick Hickock and Perry Smith. Hickock was raised in a normal fashion, leading many to determine that he was born to kill. Perry, on the other hand, had a horrific childhood. His mental disease may have been brought on by his disturbing upbringing, or it may have been worsened by it.

Psychological Analysis of Dick Hickock & Perry Smith - 0 views

  •
After looking over the powerpointish sort of presentation the psychopathic and sociopathic symptoms displayed by Perry and dick are very similar to the type of behavior we see in protagonists in other novels, such as Darl and Victor who both share qualities such as appearing to be normal, and being charming.

  • Hickock is extroverted, resourceful, and “manly.” “Dick’s literalness,” the reader is told, “his pragmatic approach to every subject,
  • was the primary reason Perry had been attracted to him, for it made Dick seem, compared to himself, so authentically tough, invulnerable, ‘totally masculine.’”
  •
This shows the fact that Dick is using Perry and he does not truly care about him. Thus he is neglected in his mid adult life which leads to his murder sprees

  • As a child, Perry was shunted from one orphanage to another, neglected by an alcoholic mother and a father who drifted in search of gold.
  •
This quote shows the neglection in perrys life. It also shows how he did not have any role models to set his thoughts straight

justice in In Cold Blood - 0 views

  •
"Dick and Perry do not fit into the exemplary American image that Holcomb and its citizenry desire. Both men exhibit symptoms of mental illness. They have criminal backgrounds. Perry has a history of abuse. Their antisocial behavior places them in sharp contrast to the American ideals of Holcomb and the Clutter family"
  •
Although this source mainly outlines the theme of justice in In Cold Blood, it also provides a good overview of how Perry and Dick were seen as outcasts.

Long-Term Consequences of Child Abuse and Neglect - 1 views

  • Difficulties during adolescence. Studies have found abused and neglected children to be at least 25 percent more likely to experience problems such as delinquency, teen pregnancy, low academic achievement, drug use, and mental health problems (Kelley, Thornberry, & Smith, 1997). Other studies suggest that abused or neglected children are more likely to engage in sexual risk-taking as they reach adolescence, thereby increasing their chances of contracting a sexually transmitted disease (Johnson, Rew, & Sternglanz, 2006). Juvenile delinquency and adult criminality. According to a National Institute of Justice study, abused and neglected children were 11 times more likely to be arrested for criminal behavior as a juvenile, 2.7 times more likely to be arrested for violent and criminal behavior as an adult, and 3.1 times more likely to be arrested for one of many forms of violent crime (juvenile or adult) (English, Widom, & Brandford, 2004). Alcohol and other drug abuse. Research consistently reflects an increased likelihood that abused and neglected children will smoke cigarettes, abuse alcohol, or take illicit drugs during their lifetime (Dube et al., 2001). According to a report from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, as many as two-thirds of people in drug treatment programs reported being abused as children (Swan, 1998). Abusive behavior. Abusive parents often have experienced abuse during their own childhoods. It is estimated approximately one-third of abused and neglected children will eventually victimize their own children (Prevent Child Abuse New York, 2003).
  • These include costs associated with juvenile and adult criminal activity, mental illness, substance abuse, and domestic violence.
  •
This source discusses the harmful physical, mental, and psychological effects of child abuse upon kids. Abused kids are much more likely to turn into criminals, turn to violence, or become pyschopaths than other children. Just like Perry, no matter how soft and feminine kids appear, the worse treatment they receive at home, the more anger they bottle up inside.
  •
Mentions some of the physical and mental detriments of being raised in a neglectful home, and considering perry thought of himself as his fathers slave, it would be fair to say he was in some way shape or form neglected, and that even if the effects dont seem obvious they can effect social behavior...

What Makes a Psychopath? Answers Remain Elusive | LiveScience - 0 views

  • Lack of empathy, guilt, conscience or remorse Shallow experiences of feelings or emotions Impulsivity and a weak ability to defer gratification and control behavior Superficial charm and glibness Irresponsibility and a failure to accept responsibility for their actions A grandiose sense of their own wort
  •
This source discusses the characteristics of pyschopaths, as well as some of the base causes that drive people criminally insane. As one can see below, between Perry and Dick, every one of the listed traits of a serial killer pyschopath is listed below.

(4) Programmed to Kill: The Cold Aggression of a Mass Murderer - 0 views

"Breivik's rigidity also fits into a typical pattern, Hoffmann says. "Such perpetrators have very assiduous tendencies and think in stereotypes. Everything is in black and white." "
  •
"Last year, United States researchers at Vanderbilt University in Tennessee discovered an especially pronounced mechanism in the brain of psychopaths, namely that they have a need for reward at any cost."
  •
This article examines Anders Beivik and his mass killing of 69 people at a Norwegian camp for teenagers. Anders Beivik systematically hunted down people for 90 minutes without remorse or compassion. This article examines the rationale behind this cold-bloodedness. Anders Beivik and the aspects of his personality that allow him to commit this act resemble Perry. Perry sees things as black and white, and he will do anything to make someone proud of him.

Happy Birthday, Truman Capote, Investigative Journalist and Author - 0 views

  •
Gives an overview of Capotes life which we learn nearly nothing about, his relationship with perry which is obviously sympathetic is somewhat odd, and after reading of his early nice, seeing the movement of his family and the divorce of his parents it makes you wonder if that sympathy stems from a connection he sees between himself and perry.

Truman Capote - About the Author | American Masters | PBS - 0 views

  •
Gives an overview of Capote's life and the struggles he had to face growing up as a child. His life seems to end up a fairytale with him becoming a literary and social icon.
  •
Describes Capote's childhood, which interestingly parallels the upbringings of the Monster and Perry. Abandoned by his mother, Capote was often isolated as a young child. However he turned his attention to writing and playing piano rather than getting revenge. Capote became an instant celebrity in his early 20s and his life was a success, unlike the lives of Perry and the Monster

Severe mental illness | How to know the difference between mental illness and insanity ... - 0 views

  •
Talks about the distinct difference between mental illness and insanity, and it is clear that Perry does display some of the signs of mental illness, and had those problems been addressed at a young age maybe the Clutter family would still be walking this earth today. Fitting the nature vs nurture theme it seems to be because of this neglect that perry receives at a young age his what seemed to be small defects or twitches per-say were likely overlooked but his adventurous father.

(5) neglect - 0 views

  •
"In considering the race and ethnicity of neglected children, the highest percentage of children who experienced neglect only (and not other forms of child maltreatment) in 2003 were American Indian or Alaska Native (67.8%), followed by children of multiple races (55.9%)."
  •
"There are other common types of neglect, such as medical neglect, safety neglect, abandonment and educational neglect."
  •
This article examines the neglect of children. Neglect can be perceived in several ways and is seen in several acts such as the neglect of education or safety. Neglect is an important theme in all the novels of this segment. During In Cold Blood, the reader witnesses how Perry was neglected as a child by his father which resulted in severe inhibitions in his development. Parental neglect was a leading contributor to the end result of Perry murdering the Clutters.

  • Capote became especially close to Smith, whose lonely childhood, physical self-consciousness, and artistic aspirations resonated with the writer.
  •
This shows that Capote was able to interact and understand the truth of Perrys isolation and irrationality. He shows this in his writing through proof of his bad parents and neglectful childhood

The Anatomy of Violence - 0 views

  •
" Scientists who study criminal violence--that committed outside of wars and civil conflicts--now believe that its roots are equally planted in the biology of an individual, the psychology that reflects the interaction of innate traits and experiences, and the larger culture. No single cause is sufficient, none is deterministic."
  •
This article suggests that it is the genetic makeup of Perry and Dick that has made them cold-hearted killers. This would explain why perry's sister is normal while Perry has a severe mental disorder.

Criminological theories - 0 views

  • The immediate social environment is primarily responsible for criminality in our society, e.g., broken families, poor parenting, low quality educational experiences, delinquent peer relations, poverty, lack of equal economic opportunity, inadequate socialization to the values implicit in the American culture, etc.
  • Crime occurs when the forces that bind people to society are weakened or broken. When the social bonds that individuals have to parents, peers, and important social institutions like the school or the workplace are strong, they fear that their criminal activity may jeopardize their relative position in society and refuse to run the risk of losing meaningful social relationships, careers, etc. Generally, adolescents have weaker bonds to conventional society than adults.
  •
This site gives a comprehensive background of several criminology theories. These include sociological, physical and psychological factors that influence individuals to turn to crime. Both Dick and Perry show signs of the presence of these theories. Perry's home life fits into the social control theory, as does Dick's ability to purposely weaken any social bond he may have created

The Psychological Effects of Child Relocation - 0 views

  • Home is a name, a word, it is a strong one; stronger than magician ever spoke, or spirit ever answered to, in the strongest conjuration."
  • The prevailing rule of thumb used to be that the older the child, the more difficult the moving experience will be.
  • Moving does not have to be traumatic for your children, however; there are many things that you can do as a parent to help reduce the impact for them, right from the moment you share the news with them.
  •
This article discusses the detriments that moving has on a child's psyche, and the steps a parent should take to comfort their child in times of such great change. Neither Perry, nor Vardaman's father comforts them during their travels and the psychological effects the change has on them is evident.

The Insanity Defense - 0 views

  • Years from now, when socialist historians of the future examine the dead carcass of US capitalism, they will pay special attention to the growing barbarism of the penal system in the late 20th century. While most attention will obviously be paid to the reintroduction of the death penalty and a racist judicial system that incarcerates minorities disproportionately, there will also have to be close look at the tendency to treat mentally ill people as common criminals.
  • The insanity defense was first used in the case of an 1843 assassination attempt on British Prime Minister Robert Peel by a psychotic individual named Daniel M'Naghten. When a physician testified that M'Naghten was insane, the prosecution agreed to stop the case and the defendant was declared insane despite protests from Queen Victoria and the House of Lords.
  •
Originally used in 1843 for an assassination case, the insanity plea has been used by many cold killers to save their lives in return for being labled as a sociopath. Both Dick and Perry undergo psychological evaluations to determine if they, too, qualify for this sentence.  Interestingly enough, this defense now seems to be a thing of the past, as some courts require their jury to answer whether or not a criminal understood his actions.

This article illustrates Perry's encounters with abuse and the negative treatment that his father gave him.
  •
This shows the troubles that Perry has in his early childhood. It also shows the isolation he faces and the poor parenting and lack of support. This motivates him to go on a life of crime

  • His romantic escapism (he dreams of diving for treasure but cannot swim, imagines himself a famous tap dancer but has hopelessly maimed legs) becomes comprehensible in the light of his homeless, brutalized background, more bizarre than any fiction; his undoing is elaborately plausible.
  •
This quote shows the irrationality of perrys thoughts for they do not make sense as he hopes to dive for treasure but cannot swim. This also goes into the effects of his childhood.

Hidden Museum Treasures: 'In Cold Blood' - 0 views

  •
Just as the car JFK was riding in when he was assassinated is a popular display in a Michigan museum, the tombstones of Dick Hickock and Perry Smith are "treasures" that the public enjoys viewing. The tombstones, which were paid for by Truman Capote, were stolen in 1980 from the graveyard in which the two were buried. They were recovered twenty years later, and now the State of Kansas owns them and plans to put them on display. A Topeka museum is now preparing a crime and punishment exhibit in which the stones and the gallows used on Dick and Perry will be featured.
