Timeline of Key Events in the American Women's Rights Movement - 0 views

  •
This website is a very interesting place to read the timeline of the American women's rights movement. It goes all the way back to 1848 up to today. We can see various key events of the movement which slowly led up to the formation of Planned Parenthood as well as the FDA approval of birth control and the legalization of abortion. It is a very good resource to see how the movement evolved as well as the timeline of each important milestone achieved along the process all the way to 2009.

Rosa Parks: Mother of the Civil Rights Movement - 0 views

  •
This article in the African American History section of About.com gives a brief biographical summary of Parks' life and civil rights accomplishments. Interestingly, it mentions that Parks' was aware of the divide between black and white people as a child, "I'd see the bus pass every day. But to me, that was a way of life; we had no choice but to accept what was the custom. The bus was among the first ways I realized there was a black world and white world." It is apparent that Parks' would no longer accept what was custom the day she refused to give up her seat on that Montgomery bus. The African American History section on About.com has an extensive collection of historical information, timelines, video clips, facts of African American activists, writers, artists, politicians, and quite a bit of information on Parks and the Civil Rights movement.

The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow. A Century of Segregation | PBS - 2 views

  •
This webpage is presented by PBS. It is a part of series produced by the organization. This webpage is not explicitly about Rosa Parks but it is still very relevant. This webpage presents "A Century of Segregation". It provides incredible background information about the history of our country and monumental events that occurred prior to Rosa Parks and the subsequent bus boycotts. The tabs are presented on a timeline and each tab, when clicked, provides more information such as "March on Washington", "Ku Klux Klan" and "Jackie Robinson". It's important to look at such historical events within a historical context because very seldom are these events isolated.

Some Jim Crow Law Examples - 0 views

  •
This site has a few more examples of Jim Crow laws across various states in the US. It also has a reference to the timeline of the segregation period in the US. While we remember that there was segregation in the US, it is sometimes hard to imagine how restrictive this period was until we read examples of different laws in different places. All based on the supreme court statement of "Separate but Equal." When reading these laws, I couldn't help but think of all the restrictions that still exist these days on other communities.

This site shows a really cool timeline from 1969 until 2010 of Gay Pride celebrations that have taken place in San Francisco. For instance, the information on the timeline consists of the temperature of the event, the amount of people that showed up, who was the mayor at the time and a picture of the flyer.

The Great Depression - 1 views

  •
This is great because it provides a summary of the Great Depression along with a timeline of events. The timeline highlights sufficient times during the 1930s, from the stock market crash, to the unemployment rates, ending with America's involvement in World War II. There is a tab that list the most influential people during the Great Depression such as President Roosevelt, which also summarize their active role during the Great Depression. There a section of photos which helps you get a glimpse into to what life was like during this time. Under the facts section, you are able to find statistics about the economy, unemployment and population during the 1930s

The Modern American Poetry site offers poems and illustrations to students of the arts. This photo essay on The Great Depression provides a pictorial timeline of the major events of the Great Depression. There are several photographs by Walker Evans, the photographer behind the image we are discussing this week. Please note: The original source of these photos- The Library of Congess- was unavailable due to the government shutdown at the time I was trying to access the LOC site.
