Women in Sports Broadcasting - 0 views

  •
Women sports broadcasters and reporters have come a long way. There was a time when women were treated almost like barbarians when it came to reporting on a specific team or game. Women were not allowed in the press box. Women were not allowed to use the same press box bathrooms as men. Women were not allowed in the locker room to get their stories. It was a tough for them to get their jobs done because of the restrictions placed on them. This site goes deeper into those restrictions.

Barriers for Women - 0 views

  •
Women faced many barriers when trying to break into the workforce. Even thinking back now, it took society a long time to allow women to make anything of themselves. Men went off to war, women worked in factories. That was when they got their first taste of the workforce. After that, they were only secretaries. It took a while for men to accept women as equals in the workforce.

King v. Riggs - 0 views

  •
This article revisits one of the biggest events of the 1970s that relates to the battle of the sexes, and the woman won. Billie Jean King defeated Bobby Riggs in the probably the most historic tennis match this country has ever seen. This match set the precedent for women in sports. Just one year later, Title IX mandated equal funding for women sports teams as is for men.

Gender Roles Timeline - 0 views

  •
This site shows a timeline of how women's rights evolved in the 1970s. Some of the key events begin with the 1973 decision that granted women the right to vote. My personal favorite is in 1974 when little league baseball became open to girls.

This site explores the history of women in the work place. The site argues that women did not belong in the work place, but at home taking care of the household chores. However, eventually the need for women to work came about when the men went off to war.

This site explains the difference between women in different social classes. While upper class women were often shopping and being courted by various wealthy men, the lower class women were typically prostitutes just to survive or had a large family to take care of.

Women and the Great Depression - 1 views

  •
Another angle to this photo is women's roles during the Great Depression. This website examines exactly that. Men and women saw the Great Depression. For women, there became more pressure to take care of their families as food and money were very hard to come by.

The Great Depression - 0 views

  •
This website goes deep into the Great Depression, how it began and how it ended. Beginning with the stock market crash in 1929 and Black Tuesday and finally with FDR's New Deal America came out of the Great Depression. Many people lost their jobs and some their lives to constant poverty and hunger. It looks as though the woman in the photo was a victim.

A fading middle class - 0 views

  •
This website gives more insight into the ever fading middle class in America today. The woman in the photo is part of the lower class. She is also from a time where there was only a third class and a first class. The last 50 years or so there developed a middle class where the majority of Americans fell into. This website shows you statistically how as of late the middle class has been slowly fading away yet again.

Social Class in America - 0 views

  •
This site shows how social class still plays a big role in American society. Although today there is barely such thing as the middle class, you are either lower class or upper class. The image shows a woman who is clearly in the lower class and you can tell by her appearance. The image is most likely from the Great Depression and you can see by this site that almost nothing has changed in almost a century.

The First Lady of Freedom - 0 views

This website dives into the early life of Rosa Parks. It really gives you a sense of the type of hard working and driven woman she was. She had to drop out of school to take care of family. She was a hard working seamstress who never did harm to anyone. One day she finally had to stand up for herself. This website relates to the photo because even in the photo you can see how calm and collected of a person she was. However, as we all know she was a tough cookie and stood up for herself.

Freedom Riders - 0 views

  •
This website recalls the Freedom Riders. These people came after the Rosa Parks incident, however were partly inspired by Parks. These brave individuals would do things in protest such as go into white only bars or waiting rooms on purpose. This is what Rosa Parks did, inspire such behavior. The image is just the beginning and led to all of this.

Freedom Hero - 0 views

This website not only discusses how Rosa Parks helped African Americans, but how she also helped women. In those days, women weren't allowed to do much as it was. Rosa Parks changed that in some way when she stood up to a white man on a bus. Rosa Parks single handedly changed the bus rules where African Americans were not only allowed to ride the bus and sit anywhere, but were allowed to apply for jobs as drivers as well. This website is useful in exploring the image because it shows you how one woman had an effect on an entire race. The website even uses the image on it's main page.

Rosa Parks - 0 views

  •
This site tells the story of the infamous day when Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white man. Rosa Parks gives her own detailed description of the days events. In my opinion her most interesting thought was that she had no idea that what she had just done would change the course of American history forever. She had no idea of how people would react to her arrest. This is useful in exploring the image because now you have some first hand dialogue to go with the image after visiting this website.

United States honors Rosa Parks - 0 views

  •
The site discusses how in March of 2013, President Obama honored Rosa Parks by dedicating a statue in her honor in the Capitol building in Washington D.C. According to the site, Rosa Parks served as an inspiration to stand up against injustice. The same site talks about bus segregation in Israel where there are now separate bus lines for Palestinians. This site is useful in exploring the image because it shows how important that day was in American history. It brought the country together in so many way. So much so that today there is a statue in the United States Capitol Building.
