    Diversity WebQuest Critiques: WebQuest drafts by preservice teachers for middle school students will be available from Oct. 31 to complete the critique by Nov. 5. Post critiques from a diversity awareness perspective (as discussed in the readings for this exploration) in this thread in DIIGO for each of the 5 WebQuests. The WebQuests will be used in Dr. Jennifer Motter's middle school 7th & 9th grade art courses in Johnston, Pennsylvania from Nov. 17-21. The WebQuest assignment for the preservice art teachers is at http://cyberhouse.arted.psu.edu/322/projects/5_wq.html

    The webquests drafts are linked below.

    Go to https://groups.diigo.com/group/aed-322-fall-2014/ and "join group"
    It is a different group than prior semesters.
    Once you have joined this particular group you can reply to the thread.

    I found the diversity of the Webquest topics very interesting. After spending a few hours exploring the projects and riding the link waves, I've compiled the following lists from each Webquest to highlight the areas I felt were the most effective at engaging students and encouraging diversity awareness.

    Collecting:
    * Group discussion based on focusing question (self-reflective questions)
    * Find cards focus on the why of choosing items
    * Project suggests the incorporation of personal artwork, as well as music, spoken word, or text

    Around the World in 80 Minutes
    * Dynamic, inviting layout
    * Engaging introduction
    * Focus on culture
    * Documentation of exploration (via screenshots)
    * Encourages artists to learn/grow/change/adapt (varying tag)
    * Why questions promote meaningful learning
    * Mission: tell a story reflecting culture and public art's personal influences

    Self Exploration
    * Lino encourages collaboration
    * Focus on gender stereotyping
    * Encourages self-reflection for intro activity

    Memory
    * Open-ended interview questions seek stories of personal experience or emotional response
    * Imagery symbolizes relationship
    * Encourages mindfulness of the experience and connection with the interviewee and artwork
    * Documentation of interview audio

    Water
    * Flow of Prezi mimics the fluidity of water
    * Clear cultural comparisons
    * Imagery reinforces purpose

    Collecting
    I enjoyed your exploration page and the examples contained there. Perhaps you can diversify the group represented by including collections of groups other than those in galleries.
    I'm not sure how the find card activity is related to the project-is it intended to be?
    I liked that you included suggestions for different learners-perhaps you could expand that area. In what ways do students learn the purpose of archiving?

    Around the world in 80 Minutes
    I was not able to watch any intro. I would suggest removing the Thursday and Friday tabs if they are not to have content. The links to the "Humans of' sites do not work, and while the sites are interesting, they may not provide a well rounded representation of the population living there. Google's street art site is fun, but perhaps would be efficient to also provide links or even an image search on popular street art. 'Blog' is functioning more like an intro. I would move the 'about' and 'contact' tabs toward the end of your Nav.

    Self Exploration
    Whoa-I see your content has changed considerably since the first couple of viewings and now a lot of my points are no longer valid! I enjoyed the diverse population represented in your imagery and examples-for a project involving stereotypes, this is obviously very important. Good intro activity and nice example video-the fact that it was made by a 15-year-old will help younger students relate.

    Memory
    I like the diversity of your memory definitions on your home page. Perhaps you could relate them to different individuals' experiences and provide examples for your students on what they can do for the project, eliminating the need for the long intro. Or perhaps you can discuss what memory can mean in specific cultures-Day of the Dead in Mexico, for example. From a functionality standpoint, I would suggest you reorder your Navigation with 'Intro' at the beginning, 'About The Creator' 'Contact Me!' toward the end. I like the diverse population represented in the video examples. The recorded conversation is such a large part of this project and rightfully so, but the image creation aspect feels like an afterthought.

    Water
    It is unclear how you intend the frames of your prezi to organize your content. If there was an explanatory video to be viewed, it did not work for me, though I opened your prezi in several browsers. I enjoyed your teaching resource link to tips on good poster design. Perhaps it would be useful to have some examples of functional mind maps using Mindjet, Coggle, etc. Your factoids regarding those dealing with unclean water sources are powerful. Perhaps you can elaborate on a few specific populations that are effected by this problem.

    Collecting
    I really enjoyed all of the different types of collections you showed and I loved the Little Mermaid reference! A couple things I would consider adding to or revising on your WebQuest:
    -An objective: what is the purpose for this webquest? Why should students be invested?
    -Find Card Activity: I didn't understand what you want them to write on the card. Will you be
    explaining these instructions in person on Day 1?
    -Is there a way you could tie this into a social issue to give it more meaning? What makes
    collections important? What if we had no collections of art in museums? How would this affect the art world?

    Around the World in 80 Minutes
    I love how you set up the importance of this project with your scenario at the beginning, and I think the twist that it took was fantastic! I like that there is a clear objective. Are there specific parts of the culture that you want students to focus on in their artwork? I couldn't get the hyperlinks to work on the pinned map, but I was interested to see what each city could hold. I really like your focus on learning from different cultures and allowing different cultures to impact the artist!

    Self Exploration
    I really like the pictures that are scrolling across the homepage that gets students interested in the stereotype lesson that you are trying to teach. Just a technical thing…your font is really hard to read with that background. Since this is 9th grade, maybe students could look at some of the images from Jean Kilbourne's "Killing Me Softly" (although I would advise you to narrow the collection down to a few select images) as part of the gender stereotyping. At some point will you be discussing other examples of stereotyping? I'm just wondering if students will know enough about stereotypes to take it beyond gender/race.

    Memory
    I really like your idea for your project. I like that it involves students having a conversation with someone of importance to them. Instead of just having students write open ended questions could they include a question or two that focuses their interviewee's memory on a social issue or an issue that helps them identify themselves? I really like the layout of your WebQuest, my only other suggestion would be to make your format more consistent. Some pages are text heavy and others have very few directions at all.

    Water a Love Story
    While I like how interactive your WebQuest is, I'm not sure this is the most user friendly format (unless I'm using it wrong). While I liked that it was a big web I found it difficult to go back and forth from one piece of information to another. For example, if I wanted to see how your information about plastics killing ocean life related to the standards it required a lot of dragging and maneuvering.

    Collecting-
    I think you have done a good job communicating your ideas using Google Sites, I find this application more difficult to use than Wix or Google Classroom. I think objects can tell significant stories about who we are as a culture or as an individual. You may be interested in one of my favorite books; "How To Be An Explorer of the World." By Keri Smith. (Google her, she has a fantastic website.)She invites the reader to become aware of their environment by becoming a collector and explore their surroundings. I really enjoyed how you used a video that most people would be familiar with; Ariel and her beloved fork. I like how she transforms the item into different use… transformation might be another Big Idea you layer in this lesson. I'm unsure how the eyewitness video fits in.
    Perhaps before you start talking about collecting, you talk about objects . An object tells a story, a collection of objects might mean something else. For a beginning activity, I would suggest mind mapping an object . Place an object at each table and ask students to write down their associations with this object and share out to the class. Place some of the objects together and see how it changes their feelings about it. This is a great way to show the diverse ideas students may have about particular objects.

    Around the World in 80 minutes-
    As a reader to your site I love the graphics, however the wordiness of it is overwhelming, and could be troublesome for a 7th grader. Can you simplify this? It appears the links in the intro is not working! " Does a city influence its art or does art influence its city?" What a great thought provoking question! The street art map is interactive and works well with your Big Idea. Since you are asking students to visit different countries around the world, you could also address the different cultural expectations art may have in certain places.

    Self-Exploration-
    Explores identity and individuality within stereotypes. I am having a difficult time reading your words, since they are light, make them darker so they can be read easier. I really enjoy the images and the opening activity. It is collaborative and insightful. I'm sure students will have a lot to say about the video!

    Memory-
    I enjoy how you take the viewer on your memories on your "about" page. You explore your memories at the museum, growing up with dogs, and taking studio classes. You'r home page is inviting, I like the many different interpretations of "memory" but to encourage more collaboration and interactivity I would ask the student's to do the same thing, but use an online application like padlet.com.

    Water-
    I really enjoy Prezis, but I'm not sure if this is the best application for it. Could you build a webquest on another site and take only part of the information and put it into a Prezi? You can link your Prezi to your website so you don't lose that fun interactive mode.

    I thoroughly enjoyed the Webquests and found that I could have spent much more time in each of them. Here are a few of my thoughts regarding each….

    Collecting:
    * Love the idea of collecting and connecting personal collecting to museum collecting.
    * Excellent resources for exploration…lots of "collections" to be explored.
    * Nice introduction videos
    * Discussion questions are a nice start…could you expand them to be more self-reflective. Collecting is a highly personal "hobby." How is this addressed in the Webquest?

    Around the World in 80 Minutes:
    * Great site. Very engaging.
    * Being able to explore "the world" of graffiti was exciting and so very interesting. This choice of material offers a wide range of students to interact with diverse cultures/artists from across the globe - globe connectivity.
    * The guided visualization was a nice way to introduce the intensity of the subject of your webquest
    * "Wednesday" was lacking a description and (while I can surmise what you intended) it is unclear what you want students to do. "Thursday" and "Friday" are blank…??? Omit or Elaborate.

    Self-Exploration:
    * excellent home page stereotype visuals
    * intro activity: typo: "designated collector
    * Lino Collage is an opportunity for collaboration and then students can be more self-reflective in creating their own "work of art" addressing stereotypes (excellent video example…almost too! good…my experience with webquests are that sometimes "examples" can be stifling to students and all of the work bears a striking resemblance to the "example"…just a thought).
    * Where do you plan to post the art works? Outside of the webquest? a gallery within the quest?

    Memory:
    * For the flow of your Webquest, you might want to consider moving the "about the creator" and the "contact me" to the end of the bar…they are not the focus of your webquest.
    * Nice incorporation of audio//demonstration of tools for students to use.
    * Some of your links are not working…did you mean for the images at the bottom of the Intro to link to Day 1 and/or Day 2?
    * You offer your students great examples of video/audio interviews
    * Day 3: Is the visual you are creating the "video"? and the actual interview being just an audio component? (Typo: don't feel limited)

    Water: Environmental and Social Issues:
    * At first, I was a bit confused by your prezi and how you were intending it to function. However, after completing it I understand now that the frames leading to the introduction were having the students reflect on issues in water pollution/conservation (Typo: frame 7 "toilet") additionally, some of your frames are empty (this is a draft….I assume you'll fill them in).
    * You have great graphics and your prezi is nicely arranged. It is an unusual (for me) webquest format and took me some getting used to. As a user, I do not feel like I have much control over the flow of the quest…which is a nice (albeit frustrating) comparison to the fluidity of water.

    Sorry I saw this message late! I labeled all of the videos with a very short blurb with just a few keywords to give a general idea! Hope it helps, thanks!
