Video - The Great Global Warming Swindle - 2 views

    joke posting??

No. People SHOULD look at alternative views to be more informed. Criticism of areas of science is a GOOD thing, it helps science to grow. Unfortunately, when it comes to this issue, people, including ACT members have a closed mind and do not want to listen to alternative view points. But I am sure many people in the group have seen it before. Have you?

Behavioural Economics? Try Biological Economics - 2 views

  •
The "Biological Economics" thing is a hyping (or misunderstanding) of the BBC article. The work it refers to seems to be an application of Complex Networks theory to financial networks. I found what appear to be some of the related publications: Andrew G. Haldane (April 2009) Rethinking the financial network (further references in the footnote to page 10) Erlend Nier, Jing Yang, Tanju Yorulmazer and Amadeo Alentorn (April 2008) Network models and financial stability Funny how these issues have been repeatedly popping up at the ACT in recent weeks. This connects both with the discussions on information spreading in networks, and with roadmaps' robustness.

The Origin of Artificial Species: Creating Artificial Personalities - 0 views

  • The first artificial creature to receive the genomic personality is Rity, a dog-like software character that lives in a virtual 3D world in a PC
  • In Rity, internal states such as motivation, homeostasis and emotion change according to the incoming perception
  • The internal control architecture processes incoming sensor information, calculates each value of internal states as its response, and sends the calculated values to the behavior selection module to generate a proper behavior.

What Open Source shares with Science - Khaotic Musings - conz's Blog at ZDNet.co.uk Com... - 0 views

  •
    Beautiful and inspirational piece.
  •
Thinking about it, probably Open Source today is more faithful to the "scientific method" than most science, as far as the communication and sharing of information is concerned. We badly need to get rid of the dictatorship of journals and assorted bullshit like impact factors...

The Art of Community - 3 views

  •
A recently-published book by the Ubuntu Community Manager, Jono Bacon. I just started reading it: lots of information, experiences and revealing hints on how open-source communities are born and evolve today.
  •
"Since I released The Art of Community, one thing has become evident: the people who are buying it are awesome. If you have bought it you are awesome. If you have not, you too can be awesome." To me seems more interesting the topic than the author. I have the impression that many people in this community behave like high-school pupils, though their production it's absolutely "awesome".

Google and Facebook Investigating Launching Satellites - 1 views

  •
unfortunately the original article is subscription only "Among the evidence the article cites for this conclusion is Google's recent hiring of Brian Holtz and Dave Bettinger. Both came from companies (O3b and VT iDirect respectively) that specialize in communication satellites. Google has also invested in O3b and a current Google employee sits on company's board. A Boeing representative told The Information that Facebook and Google are "beginning to show a broader interest in satellite technology." While both companies are looking to space to broaden their reach, the ad-supported Google has the potential resources (cash) and gumption to actually follow through in the immediate future."

Why Quantum "Clippers" Will Distribute Entanglement Across The Oceans - 0 views

  •
Quantum internet will enable perfectly secure communications, but the technology and means to build the required quantum memories and routers are still many years distant. The proposal here is to store qubits and send them in containers over the oceans. Researchers claim that it is possible to send information at bandwidths measured in teraahertz outperforming the predictions of a quantum router internet. It can be thought in space systems as well. Then the problem is still for how long are we able to store a qubit, without dephasing... PS: As a curiosity, you can find a very interesting book about containers and how in some way they changed our world: Mark Levinson's book 'The Box' http://press.princeton.edu/titles/9383.html Maybe they will do it again

Lockheed Claims Breakthrough on Fusion Energy - 3 views

  •
Lockheed Martin Corp said on Wednesday it had made a technological breakthrough in developing a power source based on nuclear fusion, and the first reactors, small enough to fit on the back of a truck, could be ready in a decade.
  •
Is positive news definitely, but when it comes to fusion energy being skeptic is the wisest course of action. On the back of a truck basically means that the energy density of the device is such that the surface energy of a (steady state) plasma is beyond currents materials limits. It is probably a pulsed (ignitor-type) device, which are prone to instabilities. That could therefore refer to their breakthrough claim, of which they hardly say anything though. Lets see
  •
Since there were already a lot of false alarms on the field, one should definitively be careful about it. However not a single detail about its structure or how it works in this new... Here http://www.fusenet.eu/node/400 you can find a bit more of information about it.
