Laser fusion reactor inches closer to ignition #NIF - 2 views

  •
a point called plasma/fuel break-even is reached where the energy released is higher than the power absorbed by the pellet. Of course, to produce 192 high power lasers does also have an efficiency. Thats why 'machine break-even' or even 'grid break-even' is more important and still quite a long way off. It does show that laser fusion is catching up quickly, although with serious bumps along the road.

Evolutionary strategy: song birds search food in morning, go eat it in afternoon - 0 views

  •
Song birds don't eat in the morning because the added weight makes them slow and easy prey for other birds. They look for good food places during the early day and come back to eat as late as possible. Correlation of this behavior with the number of predators has been found as well...

10Gbits data transmission using #LEDs #LIFI - 0 views

  •
UK researchers say they have achieved data transmission speeds of 10Gbit/s via "li-fi" - wireless internet connectivity using light. The researchers used a micro-LED light bulb to transmit 3.5Gbit/s via each of the three primary colours - red, green, blue - that make up white light. This means over 10Gbit/s is possible.

if you ever wanted to know how the famous MI5 started ... in the mind of a paranoid novelist
  •
I just love this sentence: " He gave in - and MI5 was set up - created in large part by the dreams of a socially excluded novelist, and the paranoid imaginings of the readers of the Daily Mail."

Alien star invaded the Solar System - 2 views

  •
An alien star passed through our Solar System just 70,000 years ago, astronomers have discovered. No other star is known to have approached this close to us. An international team of researchers says it came five times closer than our current nearest neighbour - Proxima Centauri. Passing straight through the Oort Cloud region. This must have left some sort of mark maybe? A binary system of a red and brown dwarf (8% and 6% solar masses) so maybe not a too significant impact on trajectories in the Oort cloud?
  •
I read this earlier and thought it might be another one of those alien conspiracy stuff. Freaky stuff.
  •
what about taking a ride on one of these? - especially if they come with some companion planets? when is the next shuttle coming?

Quoting Elon Musk, "it does seem kinda wrong"...
  •
Is it just me but isn't this just needlessly complicated? I mean, you can design the plug on the car, its horizontal and symmetric. Why not just translational motors. Probably because its boring and one wants to make a metal Dr. Octavius tentacle of course
