The number of alternative “literacies” has seemed to explode over the past few years, and the article does a great job of reining competing literacies in and organizing them under a more manageable conceptual framework.

Librarians have potentially numerous roles to play in this environment, but one of their key roles is in supporting and advising staff and students how to navigate, select and use digital tools, content and services to achieve a particular goal.

The starting point is the assertion that digital literacy is more extensive then effective use of technologies.

Research and information literacy is something students work on throughout their school career. It's a collection of skills that, when combined, means that a learner is able to find, understand, evaluate and use information. Interest in information literacy grew out of a need to create learners for the 21st century. Here you'll find information about two ways to begin to develop information literacy in your child.

Parents and teachers can help children develop research and information literacy by sharing their love of learning. Encourage their curiosity about the world and desire to find out more. At the same time, help them become wise consumers of the information they find. These are skills that will last a lifetime.

To achieve a sustained and significant impact, information literacy cannot be addressed only by librarians or only in isolated experiences. Instead, we need a holistic approach through which invested campus partners come together and advocate for the importance of information literacy and accept shared responsibility in it.

Information literacy can be incorporated into the curriculum in any number of ways. Each institution’s unique mission, culture, and needs call for a tailored approach.

So last month they started a petition on Change.org, the go-to site for Web uprisings. They demanded that Universal Studios “let the Lorax speak for the trees.” The petition went viral, quickly gathering more than 57,000 signatures, and the studio updated the movie site with the environmental message that the kids had dictated.

“These kids are really feeling the glow of making the world a better place. They’re feeling that power.”

The Teachers site leads to Google’s many apps that can be used for teaching specific subjects, as well as design and collaboration tools.

Google has revamped its site for educators, creating a redesigned repository for all its educational tools and resources for teachers, schools, and students.

The new project raises questions about childhood development and digital learning

Lifelong Kindergarten is collaborating with Tufts University’s DevTech Research Group to make Scratch Jr, a new version aimed at kids in preschool to second grade. The expected launch date is summer 2012.

Digital portfolios provide students a way to track what they’ve learned over time, compile their grades and scores and publish their completed projects. And they provide a sense of a student’s identity, one behind the transcript, when submitting their applications.

We are now in 2012, and the 21st Century is totally upon us. The 20th Century, to be honest, is not even in the rear view mirror anymore. Blogging, flipped classrooms, iPads, mobile learning- these topics dominate the airwaves of education news and technology blogs.  With the announcement of the iBooks textbook initiative by Apple, we are entering a true era of Minority Report-style media consumption.

Taking the time to master these tools is not something that can be done in a 30 minute prep session before school. Mastering the education tools of this century takes a commitment to breaking down the proverbial walls of what a teacher used to be. Mastering these new teacher processes takes letting go of the idea that your day will end when you leave the brick and mortar.

Done properly, interactive textbooks offer not only video tutorials, more personalised instruction, just-in-time hints and homework help, but also instant access to assessment tools, teaching resources and the ability to network socially with students elsewhere.

Using tools for highlighting and annotating virtual flash-cards, students can select information within the text and store it for later revision. Searching public databases, direct from within the textbook, is also possible. At school, students can sync with their teachers’ computers, to hand in their quiz results and homework for marking.
