A group of Harvard researchers is teaming up with schools in Oakland, Calif. to explore how kids learn through making. Through an initiative called Project Zero, they're investigating the theory that kids learn best when they're actively engaged in designing and creating projects to explore concepts.
"The VDOE Mathematics Institutes were targeted professional development opportunities in a train-the-trainer model that provide:
* support in the implementation of the 2009 Mathematics SOL;
* training in the vertical progression of content and pedagogy;
* instructional guidance in content areas of greatest challenge;
* electronically archived training materials for districts and teachers for use as a professional development tool.
Participants included division-level leaders, mathematics supervisors, instructional supervisors, professional development personnel, and building administrators. "
