Code of Best Practices in Fair Use for OpenCourseWare -- Publications -- Center for Soc... - 0 views

  •
This document is a code of best practices designed to help those preparing OpenCourseWare (OCW) to interpret and apply fair use under United States copyright law. The OCW movement, which is part of the larger Open Educational Resources (OER) movement, was pioneered in 2002, when the Massachusetts Institute of Technology launched its OpenCourseWare initiative, making course materials available in digital form on a free and open basis to all. In 2005, MIT helped to organize with the support of the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation a group of not-for-profit organizations interested in following the OpenCourseWare model and standardizing the delivery of OCW material. This group of institutions, known as the OCW Consortium (OCWC), has grown into a concern of more than 200 universities worldwide promoting universal access to knowledge on a nonprofit basis. The mission of OCWC is "to advance formal and informal learning through the worldwide sharing and use of free, open, high-quality educational materials organized as courses."

Edge 288 - 0 views

n his Edge feature "Gin, Television, and Cognitive Surplus", Clay Shirky noted that after WWII we were faced with something new: "free time. Lots and lots of free time. The amount of unstructured time among the educated population ballooned, accounting for billions of hours a year. And what did we do with that time? Mostly, we watched TV." In "The End of Universal Rationality", Yochai Benkler explored the social implications of the Internet and network societies since the early 90s. Benkler has been looking at the social implications of the Internet and network societies since the early 90s. He saw the end of an era: For those of us like me who have been working on the Internet for years, it was very clear you couldn't encounter free software and you couldn't encounter Wikipedia and you couldn't encounter all of the wealth of cultural materials that people create and exchange, and the valuable actual software that people create, without an understanding that something much more complex is happening than the dominant ideology of the last 40 years or so. But you could if you weren't looking there, because we were used in the industrial system to think in these terms.

Teleogistic / I develop free software because of CUNY and Blackboard - 1 views

  •
I love CUNY and I love public education. Blackboard is a parasite on both. Writing free software is the best way I know to disrupt the awful relationship between companies like Blackboard and vulnerable populations like CUNY undergraduates. Good list of why Bb is bad, including It forces, and reinforces, an entirely teacher-centric pedagogical model.

Tracks - 0 views

Tracks - I've tried a number of task tracking software, I've even tried creating my own task tracking software in OneNote and Evernote.  Unfortunately every system/app I tried fell over and I stopped using it. That is when I found Tracks.  Tracks is an open source software (free) that is built to work with the GTD system for organization.  Whether you are a follower of GTD or not, the software is simple, well written, and has the core things that you need to stay on top of your tasks.  Other software tends to have so many features that the core purpose of the software gets lost.  For go the features and use this software, it works.  I signed up for a free account at My.GTDify.com.  I also downloaded the Android app called Shuffle and have it syncing with my online account.  You can even have it sync with your Google calendar.
