  • The Online Faculty Competency Certification program is intended for future and existing online teachers. The program is designed to help faculty members become proficient in the use of Blackboard and to become effective facilitators in the online environment. What happened to the Excellence Program? Beginning Spring 2012, the Course Redesign program will replace the Excellence Program. Designed with face-to-face and online instructors in mind, the new Course Redesign program will afford all Texas Wesleyan instructors an opportunity to design a new course, or redesign an existing course, to include student-centered teaching and learning methods. The flexible nature of this program also allows faculty the opportunity to focus on specific skills and methods relevant to their particular subject and course. Instructors previously certified through the Excellence Program do not need to complete the new program and will remain certified as quality online instructors. To successfully complete the requirements for the Faculty Online Competency Certificate, participants must complete one of the following tracks:

    lThe course introduces pre-service teachers to the applications of different instructional technologies in mathematics classrooms (K - 12).  Students will examine and interpret the meanings of effective and appropriate use of technology through readings and activities.  Using technology along with existing school curriculum, either as an aid or as a supplement, students will learn to create, adapt, and find technological resources.  Students will be exposed to and use Web-applets and other resources on the Internet, computer-based learning software, multimedia presentations, mathematics forums, interactive whiteboards, spreadsheets, dynamic geometry software, calculators, and calculator based laboratories (CBL).

    Requires wireless mouse(s) Microsoft Mouse Mischief is a free software download for PCs that integrates into Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 and 2010 to allow educators to insert questions, polls, and drawing activity slides into lessons for participation for up to 25 students. Each student or pairs of students uses their own wireless mouse to do this. Additionally, the teacher gets statistics of who answered first and correctly in order. I priced some wireless mouses for the classroom and found used ones for $6 so this can be a relatively cheap

Course development can be an opportunity to bring in a librarian, someone from student advising, disabled student services and programs, and developmental education. A course design process can show an instructor how to connect their classroom with other students, instructors, and experts in the field.   • It is often difficult to explain what Creative Commons licensing is to students and teachers – this short film does a pretty good job of presenting the facts. I do think there is a need for more high quality resources to help teach licensing of digital content and especially resources to communicate what it all means to young student. What do you think?

    The POV series on PBS has been bringing a range of compelling documentaries to curious viewers for years. This recent installment from their talented crew presents the story of undocumented immigrants at a detention center in Geneva, Switzerland. Visitors can watch the entire program here and the website features interviews with the filmmakers, extra conversations with others involved in the production, and a teachers' guide. Interested parties will learn about the situation at Frambois prison and they can also watch a special interview with the film's director, Fernand Melgar. This moving film would be a wonderful addition to a class in human rights, international relations, and any number of related disciplines

There are many organizations interested in this subject, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) is one of them. This website provides access to their working paper series on mobile learning, instructional videos, and external websites. The question is a timely one, as there is the hope that this mode of delivery can "supplement and enrich formal school and make learning more accessible, equitable, personalized and flexible for students everywhere." In the Working Paper Series area visitors can read four different papers, including "Mobile Learning for Teachers in Latin America."     The Community of Scientists project seeks to pair up NH classrooms for inquiry-based science co-investigations, using technology for video and voice communication.  Teachers at Winchester School (K-8) in Winchester, NH, are working out initial technology questions by creating a Community of Scientists with Elementary Education Methods II students at Keene State College. The pilot project is to co-investigate hydroponics as a sustainable option for growing food rapidly in smaller areas. It entails setting up a simple classroom hydroponics station where students will explore how to best grow plants hydroponically.  KSC students will conduct and monitor their hydroponics experiments while students in Winchester School conduct similar experiment in their own hydroponic station in their classroom.  Students will then video chat with their co-investigators and share their findings.
