Haslea ostrearia represents the model species of blue diatoms, a cluster of benthic marine species all belonging to the genus Haslea, noticeable for producing a blue pigment called marennine famous for its greening activity on the gills of bivalves but also for its potential in biotechnology. The exact distribution of H. ostrearia is unknown. It has been long considered a cosmopolitan diatom, but recent studies provided evidence for cryptic diversity and the existence of several other blue species, some of them inhabiting places where diatoms described as H. ostrearia had previously been observed. Recently, a marine diatom with blue tips was isolated into clonal culture from a plankton net sample from Kei Mouth on the Indian Ocean coast of South Africa. It was identified as H. ostrearia through a combination of LM/SEM microscopy and molecular analysis. This constitutes the first established record of this species from South Africa and the Indian Ocean and the second record for the southern hemisphere. Molecular barcoding clearly discriminated the South African strain from an Australian strain and cox1 based molecular phylogeny associated it instead with strains from the French Atlantic Coast, raising questions about the dispersal of this species. The complete mitochondrial and plastid genomes were compared to those of Haslea nusantara and Haslea silbo. Multigene phylogenies performed with all protein-coding genes of the plastome and the mitogenome associated H. ostrearia with H. silbo. In addition, complete sequences of circular plasmids were obtained and one of them showed an important conservation with a plasmid found in H. silbo.

The weak monsoon rainfall simulation in the CMIP6 models calls for further process understanding about the Indian summer monsoon (ISM), especially the intraseasonal variabilities. Here, the remote forcing from the Southern Hemisphere on the Indian summer monsoon is examined. Over the southeastern Indian Ocean (SEIO), intraseasonal warm SST anomalies can induce low-level southeasterly wind anomalies and accelerate the background southeasterly wind. According to the mechanism of Wind-Evaporation-SST (WES) feedback, the wind acceleration gives rise to the positive anomalies of surface latent heat flux (LHF). The intraseasonal wind anomalies propagate equatorward along with the background southeasterlies; the positive LHF increases the moist static energy over the equator. As a result, deep convections are reinforced over tropics, which strengthen the northward-propagating monsoon intraseasonal oscillations. During boreal summer, the northward intraseasonal oscillation prompts enhanced rainfall events over the monsoon region. Current results indicate the inter-hemispheric impacts as an inevitable contributor to the heavy precipitation during ISM in the Northern Hemisphere. In CMIP6, the models with better SST simulations over SEIO can have stronger equatorial rainfall and more realistic northward propagation. The unsatisfactory simulations of CMIP6 are associated with the defective ocean-atmosphere interaction over SEIO, and one clue is the feeble variances of intraseasonal oceanic signals over SEIO, which is far from the observation. This research offers a new perspective on the chronic dry monsoon bias in the Northern Hemisphere; the cross-equatorial process and the bias of intraseasonal oceanic variation over SEIO deserve further attention in the coupled models.

Tuna regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs) have long suffered from the domination of distant water fishing nations (DWFNs) in decision-making processes. The Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) is no exception. In recent years, coastal states of the Indian Ocean (IO) have tried to change this dynamic - led by countries like the Maldives, Kenya, South Africa, and Australia - to deliver greater benefits to the region, including East Africa. These countries are gathered under the informal group of G16 and have increasingly improved their involvement in the IOTC. Here, we ask how the rise of the G16 benefited coastal States through participation and collective understanding in the Indian Ocean. To do this, we analyzed proposals submitted by the G16 for conservation and management measures and the participant lists of the Commission meetings in the past ten years. Our results show that, individually and collectively, the G16 has played a significant role in shaping the IOTC's rules. The coastal States have established a good representation, with only a handful of Members absent in some years. Unveiling the efforts of coastal countries is essential to guide further capacity building in the region in terms of negotiations. We also call for international oversight of the actions of DWFNs, such as the EU, whose efforts often differ markedly from their claims of being sustainability champions. The G16's work is essential to keep the coastal States of the Indian Ocean in the driver's seat for managing Indian Ocean fisheries to benefit future generations.

During feeding and burrowing, many epibenthic and infaunal animals bioturbate sediments and form a range of traces called lebensspuren (German for 'life traces'), defined as any type of sedimentary structure produced by a living organism. During a 2020 survey along western Australia in the Gascoyne Marine Park, a distinct trace was observed several times, identical to the 'spider trace' observed in a 2007 survey along eastern Australia, over 4000 km away. The purpose of this brief note is to document and describe the occurrence of this unique and distinctive type of lebensspuren and to discuss ways in which similar observations may be effectively shared to increase our understanding of deep-sea biology.
