Ugly Learning « Educator, Learner - 0 views

  • When a teacher flips for the first time, students are put under the microscope and they hate it…at least in my experience. They have to unlearn how they have been learning playing school up until your class. Needless to say, student surveys usually do not go well the first time they are asked about the new style.
  • Do not define your teaching by the grades of your students.
  • Do not sacrifice what you know is right for your students because of a number on paper.

Education Week: Bad Online Behavior Jeopardizes Students' College Plans - 0 views

  • They have met regularly since, and this year began an education program for 5th graders to address the potential ramifications of their online behavior—including a rejected college application. “By bombarding them with information at that age,” said Mr. Caesar, “and then again in the sixth grade, seventh grade, and eighth grade, we’re hoping that by the time they get to high school, they’ll understand and it will make a difference. It’s too late if they get here and they haven’t been hearing that message.”

IPads in the classroom: The right way to use them, demonstrated by a Swiss school. - Sl... - 0 views

  • Teachers I talked to seemed uninterested, almost dismissive, of animations and gamelike apps. Instead, the tablets were intended to be used as video cameras, audio recorders, and multimedia notebooks of individual students’ creations. The teachers cared most about how the devices could capture moments that told stories about their students’ experiences in school. Instead of focusing on what was coming out of the iPad, they were focused on what was going into it.

This is how I have always used them with my students. The are amazing creation tools once you get the workflow right.
  • Most of the apps on the iPads for the lower grades are aimed at creating and expressing ideas. In addition to Explain Everything, they include MyStory, iMovie, Animation HD, Google Earth, Book Creator, Show Me, Brushes, and Comic Life.

Also free microsoft programming language for kids. We use Scratch in the LRC from 7th grade on, but need to move it down to 6th. We also want to begin programming clubs for creating games and apps. This might be a good starting point for Primary.
