Facebook: All Your Stuff is Ours, Even if You Quit - 0 views

  •
The Consumerist has noticed a seemingly slight but very important (and disturbing) change in Facebook's terms of service, regarding user-generated content. In short, all of the content you've ever uploaded on Facebook can be used, modified or even sublicensed by Facebook in every possible way - even if you quit the service.

Facebook Responds to Concerns Over Terms of Service - 0 views

  •
Today's hoopla over changes to the Facebook Terms of Service have prompted a rare blog post from Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg. In the post, Zuckerberg falls short of apologizing for the changes, but rather, uses the opportunity to explain why Facebook more or less keeps your content indefinitely.

Again, One Clueless Person Destroys the Privacy Of Millions - 0 views

  • Let me tell you, in the shortest possible terms, what this means. It means you. Unless you’ve been extra careful to only watch non-copyrighted videos on YouTube (yeah, right), Viacom could sue you. No, it’s even worse: they could actually win.

Future of the Web Debate: Needs Your Votes! - ReadWriteWeb - 0 views

  • Top Questions A representative from Rensselaer told us that "right now we have about 25 questions running the gamut from internet privacy to how the web can solve the global hunger crisis." He mentioned that "there are some really good questions that go beyond the obvious - for example, a question about crossing language barriers as Internet access expands in the developing world." The most popular topic "by far" is the semantic web, but the equal most popular question overall is about net neutrality. Here are the top questions over the last 30 days, at time of writing: Semantic Web a dream? Is net neutrality essential for democracy? Can you imagine the future of the world (wide Web) without the Semantic Web? What would such a world (wide Web) look like? Muttilingual Internet--Fracturing or Blossoming? What controls should be in place on the Web, if any? How do we make sense of the proliferation of data from the ever growing number of User's social activity feeds? Can the web help us solve the world hunger problem? How can we make ourselves less vulnerable to "web failure"?

ProgrammableWeb: Web 2.0 Mashup Matrix - 1 views

  •
An experimental matrix of Web 2.0 mashups.
Usage: Hover the cursor over any cell in the matrix. A small box gives details on mashups for that API combination. Top links in hover box bring you to that API's reference page. Links in body of hover box take you directly to the mashup. Not all combinations have mashups & only those with the 'º' indicator currently have entries. Cells at the intersection of same API (ex: Amazon+Amazon) list any other examples for that API.

Note that there are two views into the matrix: the default view shows only those APIs for which mashups have been added to the database. The second view shows all APIs regardless of whether there's currently a mashup registered. It's big. Definitions: What is a mashup anyway? As always, it's good to check Wikipedia's definition, but essentially a "mashup" is a web-based application built through (creative) combination of data from multiple sources. Often, but by no means always, this data is retrieved by using a vendor's API such as those listed here. (An API? Also at Wikipedia.) Some recent press may also help explain: BusinessWeek's "Mix, Match and Mutate", The Economist's "Mashing the Web". Background: This is an experiment. It is intended to be both a reference point and also a visualization. What you see here today will change both in content and form shortly. I am quite interested in seeing the 'space' in which mashups exist. Clearly, some APIs such as Google Maps, appear to be more widely used than others. UI Issues: Cross-browser support is good but not complete. Sometimes it can b

I am very excited about this 2007 project. This could save ordinary computer users a lot of money, and give those without much resources access to a lot of database power. Data is still complicated, and some people will still reach a limit where they need an expert in wrangling tables. I am very worried about the privacy and data security issues - how many club membership databases will end up on the web as a result of this?

Ego was born to be a tool that specializes in creative writing of all sorts, one not distracted by social functionality. Owning Your Content With some websites you need to agree to Terms of Service pages far too long to read, selling your soul, and your creations, to the website operators. Not so with Ego. There are no Terms of Service beyond three simple rules: No Pornography, No Illigal Material, and the unicorns may remove content they feel inappropriate.
